Vehicular Cycling (VC) - Very narrow outside lane?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How about 6 foot lanes for very narrow vehicles? A lane motorists either use or not, depending if their vehicle fit within the lane and the destination positioning was correct.

I like the lane-sweeping function that motorists provide. And a six foot wide lane would serve my needs very well.

Motorists can't always judge whether their vehicle will fit a parking space. I'd say this was possibly asking for trouble. Better to reserve this 6ft of space for bikes, if it can be done safely - which it is in many places IMHO.
There is evidence (UK transport laboratories I think) that vehicles travel faster as lanes widen e.g. multi lane roads such as freeways/motorway. I'd like to see a big 12 foot bike lane, and 8ft lanes to the left of that :D

One issue I see with the ultra-narrow outside lane idea is the annoying habit of right-turning car drivers to slow to a stop with the nose of the car in the lane before they even look left to see if traffic is clear to make their turn.
I wouldn't mind seeing a 6 foot bike lane, if you must have a bike lane, but I think it's too narrow for cars to use safely. Isn't the minimum standard 10 feet?

only if they fit, roody! this is not design of a 'standard' lane requiring 10 feet. Municipalities can reduce the width of lanes, there's a main bridge here that necks down to 9 foot lanes.......
this is a speculative proposal and one requiring 'outside of the box' thinking, stepping away from autocentric design mandates.
