Foo - My next purchase will be~

A couple of locking gas caps. I have them on the older cars but forgot about Shorty and the other sorta newer car. People are stealing gas from the cars at the parking lot at work. Eighty bucks didn't even fill it up (less than 20 gallons) and I cannot afford to "gift" it to someone else. And neither can this guy. (http://www.contracostatimes.com/ci_9057588?source=most_viewed)

This is getting real bad.

Heh, I just ordered one for a family member's car this weekend. I've always gone with locking gas caps for three reasons. First, one vehicle my family had, its engine died in a suspect manner (later to be found out as a bolt falling and making sweet love to a piston, as opposed to the sand/sugar theory.) Second, gas theft is another issue. Last, a gas cap lock saved a car I had (it was almost on empty when I parked it), and when it got stolen a thief drove it until it ran out of gas (and he couldn't fill it up), and it wound up near a gas station rather than at a chop shop.

Just don't lock the key in the gas tank :D

I didn't think it was possible to siphon gas out of modern gas tanks. Of course, that won't matter once they discover they can just stick a screwdriver through the tank and drain the gas that way. :p

It seems everything is just like the 70s (war, pres who has -zero- clue what is going on, stagflation), except for one major difference:

Hmmm. My cars haven't been hit...Maybe that's why. Perhaps it was the people with older cars then. I didn't even take note of that. All I know is everyone is all freaked out now.

That happened to me years ago with my old Jeep before we had a home with a garage. It only took once before I got a locking gas cap.

I was able to siphon gas from my inlaws 2006 Acura MDX when I was mowing their lawn and ran out of gas.

There was a story on the news a couple weeks ago about some gas thieves actually drilling holes in the bottom of peoples gas tanks and draining them. A locking gas tank won't do any good then.

Just put a gas carrier extra thing filled with diesel or water or vinegar with an easy to bust lock on it.

I remember some guy either on Foo or another forum who had an older F-150 with a dual gas tank using one tank for the real stuff with the fill nozzle in the bed, and the other tank was filled with water and sludge, just for those that want to try to syphon stuff.

Too bad that newer F-150s only have one 25 gallon tank. :/

That used to be exclusive to kali. It's now happening in Detroit. :( (Hopped up Caprice's and Monte Carlos are starting to be pricey to fill.) I know a guy who has a good solution. He has a truck with 2 tanks. He locks one with a locking cap, and plugs the other one's hose shut. The shut off but available to siphon tank he fills with sugar, urine, paint thinner, and some gas to make sure it still smells right. Then, when his neighbors can't get their cars and motorcycles to start, he offers them his auto mechanic skills since he is one of the best and cheapest mechanics in his neighborhood, and of course he totally rips them off.

hmmm...maybe if you connect the battery to the tank and ground it somehow, when they drill it, might get a spark...think I'm gonna have to research that one.

Meh, just got the Honda gas cap in the mail, went to pry off the scalp to rekey it, and did a good gash on my finger.

Guess I'll let the local locksmith do it.

Here at work people routinely cut the supply line between the tank and the gas cap, just drain the gas out right from the tank, screw the siphoning. Happens to company cars that don't move often, and people's cars if they leave here checking out a company car for a week or so.
