General Cycling Discussion - Don't give Nashbar your Email address.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Now I'm getting Viagra and smut spam, becasue I gave my Email to Nashbar.
I've sent two emails to them to find out why they are selling their list to smut peddlers (no pun intended), they refuse to respond.
How do I know it came from NAshbar?
I've been in the habit of using the requesting domain as the recipient at my domain.
For Example, If I'm registering at Microsoft I'd use microsoft@"mydomain".com. I get every email that is sent to me. This allows me to easily get rid of spam, because I can sort by recipient. . .
Anyway, I've been getting smut spam to nashbar@"mydomain".com
This is infuriating, I realize that webmarketers sell their customer list, and I wouldn't be offended if I got ads from other sports related sites, but VIAGRA? and a PORN Site, Come on. . .
Anyway just a warning, If your trying to reduce your Spam don't give your email to Nashbar.

Now I'm getting Viagra and smut spam, becasue I gave my Email to Nashbar.
I don't get that kind of email and I'm a regular Nashbar customer. I suspect that there has been some mistake. It wouldn't make any sense for them to do that unless they are borderline bankrupt and they don't care about their customers any more.
At first I was going to dismiss this as obvious bad business well beneath a reputable company like nashbar. But I decided to check their policies.
From Nashbar's Privacy Policy at http://www.nashbar.com/security.cfm:
From time to time, we make our customer email list available to other reputable organizations whose products or services we think you might find interesting. If you do not want us to share your email address with other companies or organizations, please let us know by sending email to us at the above address or calling us at the above telephone number or writing to us at the above address.
I would hope that nashbar does not knowingly sell addresses to spammers, but who can say what those who buy the addresses will do? 67Yv8t may have a point?

I wondered where all that crap was coming from! This thread could have been started by ME!
Now I'm getting Viagra and smut spam, becasue I gave my Email to Nashbar.
So that's why I get 10-15 emails a day promoting online sales of Viagra, 10 more emails telling me it's time to refinance because of low interest rates, porn sites, and many, many more "unsolicited" emails from companies and people I don't know.

That explains mine too. I have had the same email for a couple of years and at one time it got bad. Eventually the spam slows down if you don't subscribe to any or reply back but recently since I signed up with Nashbar this problem has arisen.

Performance Bike (http://www.performancebike.com/) mailorder owns Nashbar I believe. Anybody getting similar spam as a result of getting on their list too? Would be interestiing to check it out.
I get a pannier load of spam, only a small portion of it is from Nashbar. I'm not blaming them for all the spam in the world, but I can verify that they do send me some.
I also explained my findings TWICE in emails to their customer service. No response. That is at least as irritating as the spam itself.
Just say no to Nashbar.
but that doesn't mean they aren't sending it. AOL and other consumer service providers are doing a good job at eliminating spam before they get to you.
I am alone out here in the web with no one to protect me, so I get all of it. For those of you that have your own domain:
Many Webhosting companies email systems allow you to set up multiple email accounts. Don't bother setting up new accounts for each signup. Most of the mail systems, will send any unrecognized email received to a default account. You can then just watch the default account for any emails addressed to the special email address.
It makes it a lot easier to manage your incoming mail, you can delete all the mail sent to "nashbar@mydomain.com" before you have to see it, or direct it to a subdirectory in outlook to view later, etc.
Just a suggestion. It makes it a lot easier for me.

Performance, Nashbar and Supergo are owned by the same holding company, not by Performance.
I've never had a problem with spam. Not saying I don't get any, but it's rare.

I use one of those free email addresses (i.e. Hotmail) when I buy online. That way, I can check it for confirmation emails, then ignore it the rest of the time. My personal email address is only used for friends, family, business. Works well for me!

I know Nashbar has my email address, and I get very little spam... I have my own domain like you do and as far as I know, my hosting service does not filter.
I don't know much about such things, but I understand it's very easy for emails to be intercepted in transit... I wonder if spammers got your email address that way?

I'm no huge Nashbar fan, but give these guys just a little credit....
I seriously doubt that Nashbar is selling your e-mail to spammers. That isn't to say they're not selling your e-mail, or that spammers aren't somehow getting your e-mail from Nashbar. It's just not happening the way you describe it.
What little I know about spammers I don't think they get their addresses via such straightforward methods. Some Britney site isn't going to be buying e-mail from legit outfits like Nashbar.
Nashbar might be accused of sloppiness here, but not pure evil as you suggest.

Maybe you were on those other sites and they gave your e-mail to nashbar?
Now that you mention it. . .
Naw I would have given those sites my real email address, not a fake one, wouldn't want to miss those important newsworthy updates.
Just to be clear:
I've only received a very few spams to the Nashbar account, again I'm not blaming them for all that crap that gets shuffled my way. I find it suspicious that when I notified them of this. . .TWICE. . . they refused to even respond with "no we didn't sell your email to a viagra peddler".
If they hadn't, I'd think they tell me that, If they had, I'd think they'd give me some legalese explanation ". . .our privacy policy. . . you agreed,. . .other vendors. . . possible interest. . ." what ever.
But since they don't answer at all, I tend to think they don't know whether they sold it or not, or who they may have sold it to.
Just my thinks on the matter.

From what I understand, the recent Sobig.f virus managed to weasel it's way into many computers, and it's mission is to spam. Maybe this is a possible explanation for the recent increase in this type of spam?

Seeing that Nashbar is in business to get customers I highly doubt, in fact i am willing to bet they do not sell their mailing lists to porn sites. I am on Nashbar and performance and hardly get any spam at all ( I practice safe email) did you know that there are adult sites out there that will spam you after you just visit their sites?

I agree that Nashbar is very unlikely to sell your email address to 'disreputable' spammers. However, their stated policy is that they may disclose your email address to others. Anyone who would buy a bunch of email addresses from Nashbar would be doing so to spam those addresses. Therefore, Nashbar has a stated policy of being willing to deal with spammers.
The problem can be that once Nashbar sells your address, they lose control of it. The new spammer might sell the address to someone else and they might sell it, and so on. After a few turnovers, your address is being used to sell herbal viagra(tm).
Personally, I have not noticed any spam sent to the email address I use with Nashbar. However, I think their policy is very poor and I have been reluctant to order from them since this issue has come to light.
I use Ad Aware to clean out my computer of all spyware after every internet session. You can find it here (http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10186632.html?tag=txt)
I got the creeps the first time I used it- I had over 300 spyware programs running on my computer. Once I got rid of them, I found my computer runs SO much faster!

Interesting, the LBS I work for has NEVER sold or given any personal info out for any reason. Maybe if we did we could afford to sell parts for a five percent margin.

Everybody I know is getting spam about Viagra, enlarging your p****, debt consolidation, ETC. I don't think Nashbar can be blamed. Right near my hometown a "spam monger" was busted doing whatever it is they do to junk up our email with this dribble. Heck, Nashbar probably get this spam too!

I've sent two emails to them to find out why they are selling their list to smut peddlers (no pun intended), they refuse to respond.
I concur fully. Starting in late June, I attempted to get Nashbar to remove me from their emailing lists by using the 'Unsubscribe' option at the bottom of their emails. Success was indicated, but the emails continued to arrive, and are still arriving daily, and it's now October - 4 months later.
I have emailed their customer service address customerservice@nashbar.com many times, and each time a different CSR responds with something like this; 'I will forward your email for manual removal.' Nothing ever happens, and the flood continues.
No one should ever give this company their email address if you ever hope to be able to cancel their mailings.
I'm so frustrated I could spit. They even modify their mailings so that if you add them to your 'Junk E-mail' list, the next day they have changed their 'from', and the flood continues.

If your email to them mentioned viagra and porn, then it may not have gotten past their spam filters.
I get email from Nashbar, but I use Yahoo email, and spam like that gets filtered pretty effectively. But I was getting plenty of it before I ever heard of Nashbar, and am not aware of any increase or decrease from them.

Just delete it and unsub and it will eventually taper off. Even though I think nashbar is a subpar company with subpar gear I don't think they sell their customer email to porn sites. As stated above, visiting porn sites or buying from related sites generally causes porn spam. If I get spam I just unsub and delete. If you want to rid your life of it 100% get rid of the internet otherwise get used to it. Windows is also very susceptible to viruses and spam. I have apple products so I generally have no issues. A lot of times when you purchase from an online company you have to pay attention to the checkout process. Sometimes there are boxes for related products or company offers that you have to uncheck before completing purchases or you get tons of spam emails. I recently had this happen when I subscribed to Bicycling magazine.
