TruF, you'll be fine. I'm here on BF a lot lately because we don't have any work. Not likely I'll get laid off because they don't pay us anything when we're not working. I'm at 27 hours for the pay period, should be at 60. Not a lot of jobs out there right now. Getting crazy here with guys fighting over work, accusing and bad mouthing each other, etc. I've been here over 10 years and if I left I get nothing, if I stay to retirement I get nothing. My girlfriend works but she can't pay our rent. Not sure what is going to happen, we had a meeting today to try and calm everyone down, don't think it helped.
Bad career choice, mechanic at a dealer.
Oh big john, that sucks!
gmrv4: Sorry about your job, but your life since then sounds lovely! I admit that having some time to do other things for awhile sounds wonderful.
roccobike: So sorry about what you recently went through. I've been through a couple big layoffs, and it's shocking no matter which group you end up in.
All: Thanks so much for the good wishes! Still no final word, but the company is working really hard to make a position available sooner than planned. We'll see. I'll know either way by EOD Monday. I haven't let myself get too upset, but I've had a few frozen moments of "Holy Sh*t! What just happened?" Mostly taking it one hour at a time. Life still feels sweet, especially when I'm on my bike. :)
Tru, the outlook at your company look very hopeful for you. Sounds like a good place to stick with if they like you this much... assuming you like them as well and it sounds like you do if you are considering their offer.
OK. Just found out: I get the full severance. My last day is Monday. I get hired immediately as a full-time contractor, doing a job that will get posted as full-time job in about 6-8 weeks. I'm the one they want. It's with a different group in the same company, doing something that sounds like a really good fit for me. Once hired again, if within one year, vacation benefits, etc. get reinstated where they left off.
Being rather risk-adverse, not my ideal solution. But what the hell? I get to try out contracting and get some bucks to put away. Could have been a lot worse.
Thanks everyone for all your kind words of support. What a ride.

Will you get health benefits, or have to pay for that on your own?

What are these "benefits" of which you speak?
Tru, that sounds like a very generous and interesting offer. They sure do want to keep you. Change is hard (especially when we don't want or plan it), but often times it presents something new and interesting that we end up loving. I hope this turns out to be something special for you.
Part of the severance is $1500 towards COBRA. Fortunately, hubby has own health plan and can pick me up next open season. I'm a lucky one, but have a new empathy for those who suddenly lose health insurance.

TruF, congrats; looks like you are landing on your feet. And w/a new opportunity. It's been a big week for you -- secured your future employment, and you got your very own BF poll.

Yes! What a week. Wild ride with my job and a Viagra poll, to boot! I sure appreciate all the support and entertainment this forum provides.
That is great news!! This will give you some income to count on as well as more time to continue to weigh your options. Plus isn't is nice to know you are wanted and valued by groups within the company!!
Health insurance is probably the big obstacle in keeping me from retiring. With dependents at home I need that coverage for a while longer. Good to hear your husband can add you to his policy.
