Bianchi Pista (http://www.bianchiusa.com/pista.html)

I was talking to my LBS about building up a SS for commuting and trying to save some bucks at the same time. They suggested, the Bianchi which they could sell me for around $700 bucks.

The logic behind it would be that even if say I'd spent 200 bucks for a cheap frame, then I'd have to buy some wheels (200 bucks for a decent set IF I could find some used), tires, etc... and eventually I could end up spending more then I bargained for. Gotta say that road frames up in my neck of the woods are pretty hard to come by. My used parts been contains mostly spare parts for my MTB with tons of shifting components.

At least this way I'd end up with a complete bike without the hassle.

700 is pretty steep for a new pista. i got one for my girlfriend for 500 dollars. i think its a great entry level bike. it comes with splined cranks and strong wheels. the headset is kinda cheap but thats a easy upgrade. I put a profile carbon fork on it and it improved the weight and made it handle a lot better. sheldon brown has them for a lot cheaper than 700 dollars. its not a race bike by any means but it would makes a great commuter if you ask me

Check around on the price. The 2003 model can be had for $550US all day long. Less if you shop around. Use one of your old mtn bike brake levers and spend $20 on a front brake from ebay.

I live in Canada so $700 bucks is pretty much the same as $500 US. So the price didn't seem too bad once I started doing the math. I will shop around though and see what I can find.
