Foo - Bought a chick car

The wifie and I decided our 95 Pathfinder was gettin long in the tooth, heavy in the tank, and short on the mileage. we needed a safe and reliable car for our growing boys and it needed to be good on gas. So, we went out and bought one of these;

Our's is as black as my soul.

Gets real good mileage due to the CVT tranny and is fun to drive with the paddle shifters. Got the one with AWD for the snowy Canadian winters, the stability control, moonroof and crazy stereo. Hooray for car payments.:rolleyes: Still, I like the way it looks, even if it looks a bit like a shoe(to me, anyways.) Probably pick it up sometime this week.

I don't consider that a chick car, a chick car is a small truck. That's more of an anti car.

The FWD version is supposed to get 30 MPG. We got the AWD; It gets something like the 1 or 2 M's per G less. We'll have to see what the real world mileage is like. My pre buying research I found says about 700kms out of a 60 litre tank. Thats with a 2.5 litre DOHC four banger mated to a CVT.

You realize this makes no sense, right? Simulating gears on a CVT is a really goofy idea, I guess to help transition people to the idea of a buying a CVT (at the same confusing the issue).

The paddle shifters are fun. They really help wring the "GO" out of this car. I'm a stick shift kinda guy, but my wife hasn't driven stick in ten years or so. Also, my Mother in law (grr) doesn't drive stick and she has to shuttle my kids around from time to time. So, a stick shift was a no go. The paddle shifters are a compromise and if I couldn't get the package with them, it would have been a deal breaker.

These "strange units" are what the rest of the world uses to measure things. Don't worry, my other car gets twelve rods to the hogshead and I likes it just fine.

I also thought that simulating gears on a cvt was goofy-until I tried it. Reminded me alot of my motorcycle. I honestly didn't want the car when I found out it had a cvt. I didn't know anything about them. Apperntly, Nissan's cvts are the best out there. Also, fewer moving parts=good in my book. I'm not a fan of regular slushboxes.

Can someone convert this thread to furlongs per peck so I have some usable data?

The big thing... how is it for daily driving? I don't care what the vehicle looks like, but I can't stand vehicles that I feel like I have to push or get out and flog on steep hills because of lack of horsepower.

FYI, I love my chick car CR-V. Now that I've got the color I want, the dark tint all the way to the front, the 1-1/4 hitch and a new Yakima Double-Down rack on the back.....oh, and the 30mpg highway on my 600-mile roadtrip this weekend. Yes, I was conflicted at first w/my color choice, which was made all the worse by having a car payment again, but now the world is once again in balance. I even test-drove the decidedly-male Honda Element (with a face only a mother could love) on my way home today, and it was a blast to drive but I remain confident in my choice.

The paddle shifters set the CVT to fixed ratios, defeating the whole point of having a CVT. I think it's meant to help people to transition to the idea of a CVT; a "best of both worlds" kind of design decision, even if it is kind of nonsensical.

Yup, an SUV is a glorified station wagon on a truck platform, with a relatively rough ride, worse handling and worse fuel economy. A "crossover" is a station wagon with a different name and a little more headroom.

I hear that in Europe there is no stigma attached to station wagons, though the Germans use their own euphemisms, such as the Audi Avant and BMW Touring. When I bought a Subaru Outback, several people commented on my "conservative" (as in "not cool") car choice, even though it was a great car for going to Tahoe; it had tons of room and AWD, same as their SUVs. The main real difference was that it sat lower, making it easier to mount and remove bikes and snowboards. I now drive a Subaru WRX wagon, which is just as functional as a Forester, CR-V, RAV4, etc., but a lot faster.

OK, that X6 is the most nonsensical car I've ever seen. They seem to be positioning it as the next logical step beyond the X3 and X5, but functionally I think it most resembles a rally car: all-road performance but very little practical space. But who is gonna flog that thing off-road?

X6 does look pretty cool.
wonder if it will accommodate (sp?) bikes standing up with front wheel removed and secured in those QR chocks.

Weird, I did a little research and discovered that not only did Leonardo da Vinci invent (or at least "conceptualize") the helicopter, parachute, tank, etc., but he also invented the continuously variable transmission in 1490, so it's not exactly futuristic:

I just talked to the sales dude, picking up the car tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get my motorbike back from the shop tomorrow as well, then all will be right with the world.

And Siu...yes, it is cute and that pick-up ain't a chick car. My brother's got last years Magnum and that thing is huge.

As an owner of a Murano thinking the shifters was a good wake up call. The CVT having less parts means less to repair ( I am terrible on automatics) good selling point when I was at the dealer.
However the CVT really sucks the life out of my 3.5 litere powerplant.
I get at best 27 mpg on highway and can watch the the MPG indicator go as low as 18 in town.
It is nice tho when entering the highway; mashing the accelerator to the floorboard the Murano 'glides'
right on up to highway speed smooth as a babies bottom.
I Will probably buy the 2009.

Picked up the new car yesterday. Felt like crying when we left the Pathfinder in the lot (bye ol' girl-sniff,sniff). Felt like a traitor. I get attached to my vehicles, I guess. Anyways, the new car is awesome. Nice and smooothe. My wife and I are fighting over who drives now. The steering wheel remote controls for the stereo are fun for messing with the stereo while she's using the regular controls. "Oh, this is going to be fun." she says in a voice dripping with sarcasm as I turn down her questionable musical tastes.

All in all, I like it. Being back in hock for a vehicle is lame, but whatever. It was time.

owner of a murano. however, it's the wifes car, truck, crossover, station wagon??? :) she loves it and it is our second one.

gas mileage for her in the big city stop and go traffic is 20 mpg. not great, but not horrible.
