After 10 weeks of patella tendonitis and being back on the bike for 2 mo. I just blew out my knee. Am having reconstruction of ACL and MCL on Dec. 5th. Has anyone else here been through this? How was your recovery period?, how long to get back on bike?,any recurring issues. Also how long to get out of the house and then how long to get off crutches. Any ideas would be appreciated...Thanks

I had severley dislocated my L knee 3 times, then I opted for the re-alignment. I was on crutches 2 weeks, straight leg brace a month or so. Normal activity 4 months after operatoin.

Several years ago, my partner blew out his knee skiing and had acl surgery in late May. Three days later he walked into surgery without crutches. He was riding flat terrain 6 weeks later. He carefully built up his time, 10% a week and by the middle of the summer was back to riding hills and long distances.
Hope this helps.

Nothing as serious as you, I have osteoarthritis and had surgery '95, so general answers only which are my experience to use at will, or ignore.

1. Ask, ask, ask. Surgeons won't tell you anything.
2. Take charge, don't be a patient. They are not doing you a favour.
3. Physiotherapists are hopeless. I back this up with treatment for a dislocated shoulder in '02, which also did not work. Find an osteopath who really understands knees - I was twice changed from disabled to walking in a few minutes, and he enabled my shoulder to recover.
4. Find as sports masseur. He will identify posture problems and other 'compensations' the body makes to injury, and will help with stretch-type exercises to put them right.

Of all this I think most important is to retain control yourself, make sure you understand what's going on and why.
