NorCal forum cyclist MyLilPony, AKA Tricia, AKA my very own sweet wife was just named Contra Costa County Bicycle Commuter of the year by the East Bay Bicycle Coalition. (http://ebbc.org/)

She may be too humble to post about it here, but I'm more than happy to!

Here's what EBBC (http://ebbc.org) posted on their site:

Bike Commuter of the Year

Tricia is a school teacher at Antioch Middle School and is also a dedicated bicycle commuter. She started about three years ago, commuting when the weather was nice. Now bicycling has become her default mode.

Rain, shine, wind or dark she pedals to and from school, taking her students’ papers for a ride through Antioch. Every day she exposes her 140-plus students to the possibilities of bicycling. She parks her bike in her classroom where her students can see it.

Tricia is aware that she is a cycling model for her students. She's careful to obey traffic laws and doesn't get on her bike without her helmet. She even makes a point of hanging her helmet on her bike's handlebars in the classroom. She uses bicycle safety articles in her informational reading lessons. She encourages and inspires her students and co-workers to give bicycle commuting a try.

According to Tricia’s husband, Curtis Corlew, she influenced him and some of his colleagues at Los Medanos Community College to begin bicycle commuting. In a community where riding a bicycle can mean you can't afford a car, or aren't allowed a drivers license, Tricia's commuting is working to change attitudes and perceptions through a positive example.
EBBC applauds the positive examples that Tricia and Dave display. We know that there are thousands more of you commuting every day. Please let it shine!

Tricia, maybe you can give out some of your "what to do with the hair secrets" so I can get my significant other to commute to work. Summer is here and she needs to get on her bike more than once every three months!
Congrats!!

Who's Dave?

Dave Jones is the Alameda County Bike Commuter of the year. He's on the EBBC site too. I just didn't copy his part of the story because, well, I'm not married to him.

Congratulations, Tricia! And to YOU as well, Curtis.

My GF/partner happens to be the 2007 Alameda County BCOY (Lisa Lestishock), and we relate well to the roots of your commuter lifestyle. With Lisa, she had already been an accomplished and avid cyclist, but I planted the commuting seed when we were still living apart, and guided her through her infant stages with some gear, itinerary and transit advice. She loved bike commuting from the get-go, and now it's an inseparable part of who she is. She clocks an average of 140 bike miles per week in commutes, which would otherwise be 200-250 miles in car miles if she drove every day. And that hardly slows her down from the long-distance rides we share on weekends.

She thrives on creating the good example as Tricia does with her school kids, since Lisa works in adolescent health care in East Palo Alto and other low-income communities around the Bay Area. She, too, is too modest to toot a horn, so I do all of it for her. I'm incredibly proud of her, as you -- Curtis -- must be of Tricia.

Big cheers to both of you, and maybe we'll meet ya at award night in Emeryville!

That's so cool. Thanks for your story!
And yes, we will be there Thursday, on bikes. We're both having to do some strange and odd job juggling to make it happen, but we will get there somehow.

That's wonderful, especially with the influence she has on children.

Congrats Tricia - great work

Yea Tricia! Our numbers are growing, and your example might make some of those kids into bike commuters.

I was wondering if I'd be eligible for such a thing, but then I re-read the article:

She's careful to obey traffic lawsD'oh. :p

(I doubt there's any such program in effect here, anyway.)

Hearty Congratulations!

Hope the Antioch Police Department sees the article...

Congrats to Tricia! And woohoo Lisa. I'm lucky enough to know and have ridden both ladies. Now I know why Lisa is so darn good at those double centuries. :p I'll have to lengthen my commute somehow.

Keep it really short. When my hair starts sticking out of the top of my helmet, I know it's time to get it cut!

Thank you!

I should send APD a copy. I certainly see patrol cars a lot around my downtown school site. They'll know it's me because I'm about the only person on a bike in that area that wears a helmet. And rides with traffic, in a straight line.

Congratulations!

Keep it really short. When my hair starts sticking out of the top of my helmet, I know it's time to get it cut!So you walk into the barber shop wearing your helmet, point to your head, and say, "Cut off anything that sticks out!"? That'd get you some stares... :p
