i should really be concentrating on my studies, but i don't think i can miss this race. as of now i'm planning on doing the 4/5. what are you guys racing?
also any advice is appreciated, so far i've done one crit, and... that's it. what do you guys carry with you? ie. 2 bottles or one, spare tube and patch kit, pump, multitool?
i was gonna carry 1 water bottle 1 gatorade bottle, spare tube, multitool, and pump. should i ditch the multitool and tube - i almost feel like i'd just want to drop out if i have a mechanical as i'd lose a bunch of time?
thanks for any help

Not sure what the support looks like, but sometimes in RR you are pretty much on your own. Think about how you're getting home. The weight isn't going to make a difference for you.
Don't bring the kitchen sink, but be smart.
EDIT: If I race this weekend it would be in Vernon Hills at the Crit there.
What's this course like? I've never seen it. Any maps available online??
A quick point of experience from the now-defunct Tour De Dells RR last year... Apparently they use some sort of quartz in the road surface (or for repairs) around the Dells area that's pretty sharp and if it rains will stick to -- and embed -- itself in your tires. I'm not sure this event will be running over those same roads or not (I'll be at a TT in Willard).
I was one of more than 20 people that had flats last year in the Dells race after a healthy rainstorm passed through the area in the AM. This is apparently not an issue if the roads are dry (I had no issues in the 2006 edition of the Dells event).
I do not carry a spare or any tools for RRs. If I flat and there's no support vehicle, that's it, day over. Find a corner worker and wait for a ride back.
I have seen others carry spares.
For 30 miles on what is expected to be yet another cool day (mid-50s from what I can tell so far), you can prolly get by with one bottle of your choice, but as Psimet pointed out 2 isn't gong to add a ton of weight. I also race with a small flask of power gel (Hammer Gel) mixed at about 75 percent gel to water in my jersey pocket for races of an hour or more.
John:
The flyer has a description of the course and route, no map.

Good tip. Just started using their flasks. Found it hard to get gel out when the flask runs low. Water would help immensly.
Here's the Google Map:

Routeslip using the description in the .pdf, although it saved it, it just says "Loading" ??

It shows (per lap):
Distance Climbing
14.88 mi. 930.16 ft.
Looks like I better:
- leave EARLY!
- bring a GOOD MAP!
- bring a lawn chair
- pair of binoculars
- bug spray and or sun screen
- a lunch
- a bike so I can ride before/during/after

blehhhh stupidly short races i don't think i'm going.
I'm gonna be there in the 4/5's. Only guy from wheel & sprocket in the 4's. I'll probably run a bottle maybe bottle and a half. I'm gonna throw a tube and c02 in my pocket just in case. Would rather finish than walk.
Thanks for the heads up on the roads though Porkchop.
I'll be there for the 4/5's race. Looks as though there are a few steep climbs but nothing too serious. From the road report from Porkchopwi I will definitely be bringing a spare tire and Co2.
Check out the course map I developed from the given instructions, includes elevation chart:

Ugh. 40% chance of rain, and I'm gonna have to leave the house at 5 am. Should be lots of fun.

Sweet. Very helpful.
Looks like some pain. Enjoy!!

i picked up some bulk Hammer raspberry gel and a flask at the end of last year. mainly for longer running efforts, but tried it a bit on the bike too. like you, once it gets a bit low the stuff is hard to get out. i found carrying it upside down in the jersey pocket works well too. keeps the gel at the top. just make sure you have the lid closed otherwise its gooey pocket time. later.
Has anybody ridden the course before? Is a 39 x 23 gonna be a low enough gear? Coming from flatlandia I don't know exactly what the hills are gonna look like.
I'm also thinking about picking up a set of conti gatorskins if the roads are really as bad as they sound.
How well do you climb?

That could be brutal for a 'flat lander' ... and I'm banking on that for my photos. :D
blehhhh stupidly short races i don't think i'm going.
How long should they be?
The womens 4 is only one lap, 15 miles. Driving the two hours to Baraboo for that is eh. I can't afford to do more than one race and honestly I don't think I could handle the womens open. My choices are (admittedly self-)limited...
Plus I don't know who else from Pegasus is going. And additionally, I got an email from a professor regarding concern for my grade in his class so that's also hanging over my head. I'd almost feel guilty if I raced!
I'll probably end up making a last-minute decision and going anyway but I don't know...!
I'm out. I have to be dad again this weekend.
JOHN WILKE I should be at Muskego next weekend.

That's me at the top ... cameras rolling. The harder the rain ... the better. :D
Maybe I can run along side the pack with my video camera?
Will also be at Muskego the following week (killer course).
Ahhhh ... good reading!

I'm planning to be there. I love the course. Not too many turns. Those are kind of tricky sometimes. Nice short uphill finish.
Whats the recommended clothing for 45 and raining?
Whats the recommended clothing for 45 and raining?
I'd wear:
bibs&leg warmers
base layer
jersey
arm warmers
wool socks
full gloves
Bare legs, Icy Hot / Ben Gay / Embrocation of your choice, perhaps topped with a very thin layer of vaseline or baby oil (water repelant). I hate tights / leg warmers. Otherwise as stated above. You'll be working plenty hard enough to stay warm.
I can always tell a 1/2's pack when they ride by, compared to all others ... you can smell their legs (embrocation, not ... never mind).
;)
well, i will no longer be there. i spent the last 2 days sick, including lots of puking yesterday.
good luck everyone!
Heading out pretty soon, will report tonight.
Good luck to all.

Just got home.
4th in the 4/5 race. There was a break at the top of the first big climb, and I was in the 1st chase group. The break splintered into two guys, and our chase was four people. I sprinted for 2nd in our group. So $20 in the bank, bringing the day to a total of $37 with food gas and entry, which isn't bad.
Just got home myself.
Congrats on the tough race!
Yes, it was raining, but it wasn't 45 ...
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc54/biffbradford/cycling/MAY%203%20BARABOO/08038.jpg
... and yes those roads are hard on tires. I helped out two guys with flats - drove one back to the S/F and loaned out a front wheel to another. THose flakes in the pave' come loose and are SHARP!
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc54/biffbradford/cycling/MAY%203%20BARABOO/08086.jpg
So, how was the 39x23?
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc54/biffbradford/cycling/MAY%203%20BARABOO/08117.jpg
No, that wasn't taken from a helicopter! THat's the women's pack taken from about 3/4 the way to the top of the WALL.
More later after some grub and a little COPS.

There were a few times I wanted lower gears. Especially when the chase group dropped me on the 2nd climb on the 2nd lap.
But I caught them and out sprinted 2 of 3.
Were you there for the mens 4/5?
Yup. Refresh my memory - team / helmet / bike ?
I think this is the 4/5:

Wheel & Sprocket
I'm the 1st guy in the 2nd picture.
Were you wearing the gray sweatshirt?
No, I was standing on the side of the road ... red Adidas jacket.
I believe this was the 2nd lap. Good times. http://www.freedomcrowsnest.org/forum/images/smiles/lol.gif

Edit: Okay, here's your 4/5 leaders ... last lap. 2 miles to go. Frunkin is hiding in that second group.
