I need to replace my tire. My Trek came with Bontrager Select K tires. I got one rear flat in 1600 miles and changed the tire at about 2500 miles. I replaced it with a Bontrager Hardcase Race Lite. I have 2400 miles on this tire and got my first flat today. Last year I heard a clicking noise and tracked it to a small nail (looked like a carpet tack) in my rear tire. The tack went into the tread hit the carbon layer and pushed out the side. The tire never lost air. I just pulled the tack out and went on my way. Today's flat was due to a vey fine piece of wire that somehow got through the carbon layer.

Anyone else have a tire they would recommend? 700 X 28C.

Before you state the obvious (why not buy the same thing again?) I will explain, I tried to order another tire, but none of the shops will ship due to the dealer contracts. I am not happy with my local Trek dealer's attitiude and refuse to buy anything from him.

Soma Everwears seem to be a really nice tire, so far. An extra 5 MM of rubber in the tread area, and they respond with great snap! I'm actually running 700X26, and they roll easy and hold well on high speed corners.

Local Messengers and Single Speed/FG riders swear by them as a high mileage and reliable tire, and thus far,I'd have to agree with them :D

I swear by my Conti Ultra Gatorskins. I ride over all sorts of potholes, gravelly bits, some glass, and all manner of sharp things: In 1300+ miles I've yet to flat out, and that's on 700 x 28 size.

I've been commuting on Specialized Armadillos for a few years now without a single flat. I've used both the 700x28 and 700x25. The rumor I've heard is that they don't roll or grip as well as some other tires but they last a long time and are pretty bombproof.

I agree. I have the Armadillos in size 700x23c and have yet to flat out here in New York City. I have been using the same set of tires since I was 340 pounds (i am now 269) without incident.

I've been using Gatorskins and have gotten more flats from glass than I ever have before. LBS guys recommend Armadillos - if these get more knicked up I'll probably switch over.

Thanks for the info. I like to buy locally if I can so I bought an Armadillo from a LBS. I got the same size I was using 700 X 28. I have ridden this twice and both times it felt like I was dragging an anchor. Both times were slower average speeds than prevoius rides on the same route. I will continue to use it and see if it is the tire or the voices in my head.

What is your reason for 700x28c?

I would recomend 700x25c and get Michelin Krylion Carbons.

If you want to stay with a 28, Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase. I have over 2K miles on mine and they still look good and I never flatted with them. Great tire.

I went with Vredestiens.
I'd been using Vittoria Rubinos and could not believe the livlier feel of the 'stiens. Almost like the old tubbies I used to ride back in the 70s... without the flats!
While 'stien advertises pressures up to 160psi I usually stay 20 below the max as I'm running a vintage wheelset on the 91 PDG
