This is what happens when a cyclist tries to run. These are my results from my first multi-sport event this weekend. It's was a short course duathlon. For those that don't understand the numbers, I had the 68th fastest first run out of 92, the 12th fasted bike time out of 92 and 53rd fastest second run out of 92 and ended up 30th over all out of 92. As you can see I was pathetically slow on the runs, but pretty darn good on the bike. I guess I need to work on my running speeds and my super slow transitions.

Congrats on your Du! What were the distances for each leg? I did a sprint distance duathlon way back in 1994. It was a 2-mile run, 14-mile bike, 2-mile run. I finished in 1 hour, 30 min. I didn't think I did so bad...then again, that was 14 years ago when I was only 28. Now I'm 42, and facing my first ever sprint distance triathlon in 7 weeks...yikes!

Congrats on the event, I'd be happy just to do it!
Nice job! I couldn't run down the ice cream truck at this point in my life.

Way to go!
You just moved up to Hero status. I want to run in a duo or tri by the end of the summer. You have already been there done it, got the T-shirt.
Congrats,
I guess Cain really can do.

The moral is: Too much running, not enough bike riding. :)

It was a 2 mile run, 12 mile bike followed by a 2 mile run. I didn't know how to pace myself and I'd never practiced trasitions. I sandbagged the first run thinking I'd run out of steam but I didn't. I could have easily been 5 minutes faster by upping my pace on the first run and faster transition times. I finished in 1:32 as it was, but I'm a little disappointed knowing that I could have been much faster. This was a building block for the next race. I've been busy the past 6 weeks and wasn't able to put in the training time I had planned on. If I had I probably would have tried the long course which was a 5k run, 30k bike and a 10k run. That 10k would have been a toughy for me.
My first Tri will be the end of June. There is one sooner that I'd like to do, but life is getting in the way.

I think, given the fact that this was your first "du"...your finishing time is very respectable. I'm pretty sure I had done the same thing on the first run during my duathlon...slowed my pace thinking that I'd run out of steam for the rest of the race. I made up a lot of time on the bike portion though...passed a slew of people that went out way before me...so that felt pretty good. But holy cow...that second run...OMG!!! And I did practice the bike/run transition several times beforehand...but man oh man...it took my legs a good 1/2 mile to figure out that I was actually running and not cycling any more...LOL That was brutal, to say the least. But...now I know what to expect when I do my tri in June. Although I can't say that I'm looking forward to that bike/run transition...at least I'll be a bit more prepared for it this time around. :-)

I'm still struggling to get my weight back down below 200 (currently 215 and 5'10"). I ride a lot - commute 2X a week (43 miles RT), a 30 miler on Saturdays, and 50+ on Sundays. This past month, I've done an 86 miler, and a 101 miler this past Sunday....but running? that's another story. We had a neighborhood 5K that my daughter wanted to run, so I decided to start training for it - my first run I ran for 15 minutes....and it was hard to walk the next day. I stuck with it, and after a month, I could run for 30, and not be (very) sore the next day. Race was on Saturday, and I ran a 26:10. Not fast, but better than I thought I would do.
Now if I can only get down below 200, I'll be able to climb a bit.

I think your 5k time was great...especially for only having a month's worth of training! Heck...I've been running on a regular basis for the past 3 years, and I ran a 5k on April 13th. I ran a personal best for me...28:19...hell, I figure anything under 30 minutes is pretty darn good in my book! I came in 161st out of 342 women runners...so I did better than half. Sure I won't be breaking any records in my lifetime, but then again...that's not my goal.
