Mountain Biking - Blackspire Blackguard for 1 x 9

Okay so I decided to order the Blackspire Blackguard inner guide ring for my 1 x 9 setup. (can also be used for SS)

It was designed to "sandwich" the chain and keep it on the chainring in the rough. The biggest limitation with inner guide rings is clearance. I don't know if it's on backwards, but it will only fit my frame this direction or it will rub on the stays. I cranked like a mad man on my cranks and couldn't get it to flex into the stays, but I may still take it down another millimeter or so for added assurance.

I also got a Jump Stop off ebay for 5 bucks JIK this doesn't work, but I think this will fit my needs alright. The only thing I need now is a dedicated SS chainring with taller teeth and no ramps.

You can see where I touched it up a bit with a dremel...it was taking too long, so I'm gonna take it down with a PK wheel.

You could have duct-taped it to the wife's lazy susan and 'turned' it with the Dremel :D

I've climbed everything at the Mansion with the middle ring so far. I wanna show brother-Harland how to climb that short / steep section with a 32, hahaha.

BTW...Ricky & I went looking for the 3 of U on Mon...ended up heading home after a few more loops.

a simple and effective chain guide

•mounts in line with the outer ring thing & middle ring for better mounting & clearance
•allows use of a granny gear to be mounted on the other side of the plate so you can manually switch to an easy gear for those long climbs
•use in conjunction with eNVy ring thing
•covers 30-36t ring sizes

The only problem I can forsee with the eNVy is that it mounts on my middle ring spot and I'd put my 32t on the outside where the big ring is supposed to be. That would mean that when I'm in my lowest cog...I'd be all the way to my outside chainring putting hella angle on it. One good grunt and I'd prob. snap the chain.

My intention with the 1x9 was also to rid myself of the granny necessitating some standing-honkage while I climb, hehe. There really aren't many hills here that need a granny. I can think of a couple of technical sections on a trail that I rode once with B2B last fall. Other than that...it's all quick/short/steep stuff that I can do with my 32. I don't know the angle...but the hill that I was talking to "the hick" about is prob. about a 45 degree grunt for 25 feet or so with a lot of rocks/roots and then it slackens at the top to maybe a 20-30 degree grind for a while.

I get it now...it's still a middle ring, you just use spacers to move the granny inward a bit.

Isn't that a clever little dickens? And with your external BB, it seems like there'd be enough room for an inward-spaced granny too. But I keep forgetting that you are in the land of no hills :p

Alright...I got my new frame this evening. It's definitely straight. I didn't have time to build it, but I threw the rear wheel on and it has perfectly equal spacing on each side. I did have a moment to install my Diabolus BB cups...dang they're bling! They have sooo much more thread too.

I'm gonna try to finish tomorrow, but unfortunately there will be some T-storms coming through...no test ride.
