Fifty Plus (50+) - BREAKING NEWS: 16-year old abandons car, rides bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

That's my boy. Despite being 16 and having a car, he's parked it and now bikes 6 miles to school. He's in the Eco Club, and running for president, and now says he "gets it" about these environmental issues. I'd like to think that seeing his old dad in spandex and a goofy helmet has caused him to conclude that it's really not that dorky to ride a bike. I'm pretty proud.
Congratulations, Kerlenbach! You did well raising that young'un. The exercise will serve him well, too.

Cool.
I guess the little clinking beer mugs icon would be less than appropriate...
But congrats!
Alright!
Kerlenbach Jr. For President!

That's great.
Personally, I was "way too cool" to ride a bike to high school....now I regret that those high school and college years were my non-cycling years. Would have been a great hobby to pursue through school to help blow off some steam outside of class...

That should be on your local news! The decision that is. Winning the election would be the icing on the......no, the ice cream on the pie.

Great news, and a worthy news headline, but like lots of good news it isn't likely to be on the news, which is why I seldom watch the news. (The grammar police are gonna "sentence" me to a long "period" in the state "pen" for that run-on sentence.)

Congratulations to your son and I hope he wins his election.
Maybe his example will help get other kids on their bikes.

Are you absolutely sure that he hasn't met a girl at school who is very committed to green?

Good for him! We need more like him.
I am not fifty, but I had to post in here on this one.
THAT IS AWESOME. Kudos to your son for his actions and to you for providing a positive role model.

Congratulations. As the father of a 19-yr-old girl, I know how hard it is for kids to buck the trends. My daughter still considers cycling to be absolutely dorky, but I'm hoping that college will change that. I started cycling in college as it was my only way to get around and kept it up thereafter.

Thats the real reason----Has to be.
But good on the lad- but 6 miles to school? I used to have that trip every day- on a bike with Square wheels- and a broken leg in plaster when I was young.

Well done. It seems that if we really want to get serious about moving people out of cars, all we have to do is convince teenaged girls that people who ride bikes are cool. That would start a movement. ;)

Got to agree with you there... a girl got me back on two wheels... funny how things like that work.
