I always loved Gary Larson's two-part Far Side cartoon about this topic.

Cartoon #1 was two panels, the first labeled What We Say To Dogs, showing a woman lecturing her retriever: "Bad Ginger! You knocked over the house plants, Ginger! You are such a naughty dog, Ginger!" and the second panel labeled What Dogs Hear showed the exact same scene only the woman's word-balloon read "Blah blah Ginger! Blah blah blah blah, Ginger! Blah blah blah, Ginger!"

Cartoon #2 was essentially identical, two panels, the first labeled What We Say To Cats, showing a woman lecturing her housecat: "Bad Ginger! You knocked over the house plants, Ginger! You are such a naughty cat, Ginger!" and the second panel labeled What Cats Hear showed the exact same scene only the woman's word-balloon

..was completely blank.
