Went to the gym with my wife last Sunday (we had to drop my daughter off at church, so we went to the gym near there).
Sue (my wife), who has been trying to get some endurance built up so she can go on longer bike rides with me, suggested we use the stationary bikes. This gym has seen its better days, and the stationary bikes are fairly old and were somehow built in such a way that they couldn't be adjusted well. After 30 minutes (I normally go for at least an hour) I'd had enough and we moved on to the rowing machines...finished up and went home.
My ride into work went well, making very good time.:D
The ride home however...was much less than ok. My Right knee started popping with every pedal stroke (no matter the gear I was in) and I geared down low & made it home pedaling one legged.
I found later that the knee feels fine as long as I'm walking...but cycling, though possible, wasn't comfortable and standing from a sitting position was a complex series of maneuvers.
Now I'm riding again...and as long as I stay in the lower gears and keep the pressure off the knee I can still get back and forth to work. The bad new is that I've had to cancel the 40 mile ride I'd been looking forward to doing.
Hopefully, the knee (with careful riding and rest) will recover so I can push the training again.
Blargh!
The moral of the story is if gym equipment doesn't adjust to EXACTLY to the position you need...don't endure slight niggling discomfort...avoid it like the plague. (steps off the soap box):o
