Road Cycling - Poll: Who here buys or sells on eBay?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Do you buy, sell or both?

If you have never done it I still want a "Nope never" post.

If you sell then what do you have up?
Post links to you user, not to specific items.

I buy and sell on eBay any time I want something bicycle-wise. Or other things, as well. Just paid $126.50 for a new Campy Record RD. Cheapest e-tailer price I found was $179, so saved over $50 and didn't have to listen to my LBS whine about having to order in parts, etc., which they don't know how to mount and adjust worth a damn, anyway.

I have been buying and selling on EBay almost as soon as it got online, mainly photography equipment but more recently some bike stuff.
It's a very convenient way to make great deals. However these are harder to find as the site has become so popular.
The key to buy well is to know what you are buying (some buyers actually pay higher prices for used stuff that they would pay for the same product new. weird!), check the seller's feedback records (yes, there are crooks up there), and set your own price limits. For sellers, make sure your auctions end at a time when most people can be online as most buyers bid within the last minutes of the auction, insert a picture of the item on the auction, and describe the product accurately. A bad feedback record can be a killer especially for sellers.

I have pretty much bought 90% of my bike on ebay and assembled it myself. I then have also sold a lot of parts I upgraded from. Before the bike I sold a lot of stereo equipment that came from my car that I sold.

No sales

I am curious as to why you did not do a formal "poll"? Would have been interesting.

I've bought a few things and am thinking about selling. I don't know the best way to get started. It seems like there are so many options for presenting your stuff and also payment options. It's tough to know what to do.

I've never sold on Ebay but have purchased a number of cycling related items in the past. The really good deals just don't seem to come around as often as the used to :(

I've mostly bought on ebay, but I have sold a vintage rear derailer, track bike and a few other things. Its fun to see some of the stuff out there and you can get some great deals.

I think ebay is one of the great things that have come out of the internet. Think about it, we now have access to other people's junk. I mean these things were sitting around in someone's attic or garage not being used. Many people love the idea of getting a great deal, but now instead of people putting stuff in the the landfill, its being sent to someone that actually has a use for it.

I also sold off a few wedding gifts that we got and never used...now that I think of it, I have a few other things to put up for sale... :p

I should be a member of the Frequent Buyers club.
One of the only places I know to get vintage parts
for a reasonable price. After a while you get to know
the sellers, who's good who's not so good and who never
to buy from.

Change your LBS? Mine will always match prices (for new gear) and does know how. Never buy anywhere else - life's too short.

I paid more most of my newest frame from selling crap on ebay, photo stuff, boy scout patches, posters, etc... you can get good deals if you know pricing, and watch, and get lucky

You didn't have a selection for Buy often, Sell once in a while. That would be me I guess.

You have to use some common sense when you buy. You have to READ THE ENTIRE auction. If all the details aren't there then ask the seller questions. If they don't reply then I won't bid. I've gotten a lot of bargains and some stuff I could not really find anywhere else. I havn't been burned yet so I guess I'll keep buying and selling until I do. :)

I have bought a lot of vintage watches. I have sold some watches and lots of old computer stuff. I have not done any bicycle related transactions.

To find the good deals you have to be on there every day. Not just go there when you actually need something.

A good hobby and additional income to fund your fun stuff. HINT: make sure if you buy, you figure shipping in the TOTAL, if you sell, make sure you cover all your shipping charges. I'd say I have upgraded all my optics free to Zeiss, Leica, and road bike to a Litespeed courtesy of Ebay.

From time to time I have sold and bought stuff on eBay. My last selling experience was not a pleasant one. I have had to re-list my Litespeed frame a second time because some guy in Canada bid on and won the auction... EVEN THOUGH IT CLEARLY STATED IN THE AD THAT ONLY U.S. BUYERS, AND PAYMENT NEEDED TO BE A CASHIERS CHECK OR MONEY ORDER!!!

Needless to say the guy did not want to wait the required four to six weeks for the frame to clear Canadian Customs, and on top of everything he did not have a way to pay with a cashiers check or money order in US funds.....

While we are on the subject... If you are interested let me know.

I've bought a number of items on eBay over the years and been satisfied without exception. Today is the first time I've received a message like this....

Please be advised that the following auction:

2968351948 - $500 AAFES MILITARY EXCHANGE STORE GIFT CARD

was ended early by eBay. The auction was ended due to the account suspension of the seller.
All results for this auction are null and void.

Close call perhaps?

e-bay is how I prevent bicycle paraphenalia from completely filling the garage. I sell old stuff that I have replaced (always accurately describe it's condition and usage history), new stuff that I didn't need, whatever. In return I make a few $$.

My most recent sale (buyer scored, IMO!):

I buy something off Ebay about once a month. Before I bit on anything I check the persons Feedback. And so far I haven't been disappointed. I did get a jersey once that was too small for me,but that was my fault for not knowing that euro. sizes are different from U.S.. So I gave it to my son.
