So I think I'll have about 4 weeks to bike through Germany this August. I'll be living in Austria until then and saving up as much money as I can. The duration of my trip will be affected by the amount I can save. I'll also be cutting every corner I have: camping, stealth-camping whenever possible. I also speak German so I hope to be able to find people who will let me pitch a tent in their yard or field. I hope to cook most food myself, although I'll be buying at least a few beers per week.

Can anyone recommend a good route for this amount of time, maybe even considering my budgetary constraints? I'll most likely enter Germany at Passau, having biked up the Danube from Lower Austria. I'll be flying out of Frankfurt at the end of August. I'll have a fairly heavy load so I won't be able to do too much each day, but I should be able to do 100 km or so on fairly flat ground.

Suggestions?

The Donau to Kehlheim, then the Altmuhlradweg to the Main, then up the Kinzig radweg to Fulda, then the Fulda river and Weser river radwege. Oh, the Romantischestrasse is wünderbar as well!

You could also go until Donaueschingen and follow the bike route from Passau, then swing south towards the Rhine/Swiss border... Lake Constance etc... in Switzerland there is a good network of bike routes, among others the Rhine route. This would lead you to Basel (also nice for the proximity of France), where you could follow the Rhine up to the Frankfurt area, both on the french and german side of the border. Don't try stealth camping in Switzerland though... policemen/border guards are not really friendly with those trying... wake you up in the middle of the night and make you leave on the spot.

The dolomites are awesome and steep!. Not quite enough for a 4 week ride, but could be included in an overall itinerary. I always prefer the mountainous areas as they are generally quieter, and far more scenic.

I am planning a trip which will include the southern area of Germany through the Bavarian Alps later this year - for exactly that year.

The Dolomites are very pretty, I go every year. Too hilly though for my taste for touring.
