From the state line (Ridge RD) out to the laporte area? My wifes cousin has a nice house on a lake (Fish Lake, Walkerton) and I'd like to try the ride out there. The best way I can find, is mostly straight out ridge rd. I ride it to and from school, but have not gotten past MLK Dr. in Gary. What's it like out there?

Wow. I'm originally from Valpo, so anything in Lake County is ghetto. I've done this in a car a few times. I used to sell cell phones on Broadway on the Merril/Gary border.
Wow. On a bike? I guess in the morning you'd be fine 99.9% of the time. Seriously. Once you get to within a mile of 65 you're fine the rest of the way... Except for the traffic running you down and leaving you for dead in the ditch. That's the bigger worry really. I wouldn't ride it for the traffic over the ghetto factor.
If nothing else you'll get some interval training. See something sketchy, straight to 110% FTP.
Good luck.

Once you get past 65 going east it is a pretty busy road. You will definitely have problems from the Porter/Lake county line as US 6 is under construction and is VERY narrow and just as busy. This lasts until just past Willowbrook road in Portage. After that it will be a pretty scenic trip (except for everyone driving by you at 60 when you get past route 49).
I drive this road pretty regularly and live in Chesterton. Also, Gary is not that scary as long as you stay on the main roads and it is daylight.

Isn't there a trail that runs from out near Griffith to Hobart? I road it once, but there were just to many broken bottles along it. It was a fairly scenic ride though.

Try this link http://www.indianatrails.org/Oak_Savannah_Trail.htm It goes from Griffith to Hobart roughly parallel to rte 6.
