Road Cycling - Gear Ratio's & Speed Spreadsheet

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This spreadsheet (picture in the attached PDF file) has been popular with my cycling friends. Whether building a machine from scratch or just considering a gear change, it's fun to look at all the possibilities.

If you're interested in a copy of the Excel file, post a reply with your email. If you don't want to post your email id on the forum, send it to me at dacook@fedex.com.

Your chart doesn't show my gearing. 48-34 chainrings and 11-32 cassette.

The attached file was just a PDF to show what the spreadsheet looks like. If you want the actual Excel file, I'll send it to your email. This forum doesn't allow Excel files to be posted as attachments. The spreadsheet allows you to input any chainring cassette combinations you want, up to ten different chainring sizes and 9 cassette sizes at one time. It will calculate the gear ratios as you enter the sizes. If you want speed calculations, you simply enter any cadence number you want and the circumference of your wheel (in Feet). It will then give the exact speed for every chainring and cassette combination you entered.

cycletourist was kind enough to send it to me a while back and it works excellent.

you can rename the extention to something like .txt from i think it is .exl and when we download it we just rename it back!

Nope-doesn't work that easily, at least not from a .pdf file. You can, however, import .txt data into a spreadsheet, provided the format is properly done (commas between data inputs, etc..), but I don't know any way to export out of a .pdf file.

There's a spreadsheet in this thread:

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=19986

that works pretty well for figuring out cadence and speed based on user inputs for wheel size and gearing. Get the one at the bottom of that thread since it was modified a bit after D*Alex pointed out a small calculation error.
