i had this locked up at One Liberty Plaza (near century 21 and the WFC site). It was stolen sometime between 9am and 6pm on Wednesday 4/30/08.
The bike looks exactly like this one: (ultegra, with an american classic front wheel):

i figure there can't be too many of these around town, the zebra paint job is pretty eye catching.

I suppose it gets everyone's attention, but I'd think it might've been good to put "Downtown NYC area"?
Sorry to hear about your bike.
yeah, you're right. i actually meant to include that. at least there are a lot of new yorkers in the northeast forum.
Oh whoa whoa whoa... wtf?? You locked that thing outside?
BTW wasn't that thing trashed in your accident and "disappeared"?

yeah, that was the same bike i had the accident with. technically the bike shop said it was "damaged" and unridable...but it made a good commuter for a 10 mile round trip each day. I really don't think anything was wrong with it at all. i'm really pissed because i had a nice american classic wheel on the front (which i was only using temporarily due to a flat on the other wheel)...urg.
i figured that location was as good as any to lock a bike. there were security people walking around, it was off the street in a sort of private area. on the bright side, at least there is more room in the apartment now. :p
Odds are, being this is NYC, even if they captured the whole thing on camera, it's about as good as gone. Start browsing on ebay and craigslist.
So what are you gonna do now? Get a new bike?

i'm gonna get a kryptonite new york fahgettaboudit chain, and another u-lock (and possibly another cable lock) and then start riding my regular road bike. i work near wall street, so i think i'm gonna lock up right near the stock exchange where all the cops are all day.
if that bike gets stolen under those conditions, then i know that it's a lost cause. THEN i'll get a new bike and just ride on the weekends or something.
is the fahgettaboudit chain the best there is? any other recommendations on locking devices?
Generally unless you want to get one from abus. I actually have a 4ft fahgettaboudit that I haven't used in like, 3 years. How was the allez locked up?
BTW: if you want a bike for tooling around, I might want to get rid of my scott P4 (i know.. i just got it..).

A couple of years ago I encountered someone in the LBS that had his bike stripped of all components outside the WFC. He also thought it safe to lock it up there because of all the security around.

I've got a fahgettaboudit and have been happy with it so far, though it's heavy. Heavy peace of mind. Sorry to hear about your Specialized; you just started working down there, too, right?
Is everyone out there familiar with the CityRacks program? Contact the NYC DOT and request a rack they will install racks if they deem the location right for it:

I've never tried it myself, but give it a shot. If enough people request racks for a location they might install a few.

yeah, i just started...about a month down there. my locks weren't the greatest (i had a bell u-lock and a cable lock) so i'm not really that surprised. i should have had better locks. lesson learned.
thanks for the link on the cityracks program. i know my co-worker requested one, so perhaps i should as well.
It's probably more secure to tightly wrap a good chain or u-lock around a parking meter than risk one of these City Racks for a full work day. Meters are set into the pavement rather than just bolted to it. And if someone tries to saw off the top, with all that city money, police are more likely to respond.
We used to have two City Racks in front of my apartment building. Now we have none. It's just too easy to back a car into one and knock it out of the sidewalk.

I'd call or email the local shops just in case. But yeah, craigslist is where it might end up. That's a pretty distinctive Allez. I've only seen 1 in NYC over the past few years.

If one does come across it (particularly when being used by the thief) what would be the appropriate action? Just curious.

Perfect! Punishment to fit the crime. Ah, those were the days, eh?

What? No!
Punishment completely disproportionate to the crime. Those were the days.

Damn, Tim that sucks. You just started riding that downtown right? After all the encouragement from guys like me too. I feel partly responsible.
Mine is in front of the American Stock Exchange most days now for a couple years, and still no problems, but everyday on leaving, I expect a surprise awaiting.

actually, yesterday at lunch i walked around scouting for new places to park. i saw your bike out in front. :)
no worries... i knew i was on borrowed time with the locks i had. definitely not the greatest and i really should have upgraded them, but i kept putting it off. i'll be up and running again next week.

Next week is turning into a great week after all the rain this week. 65's all day & sunny.
Next time you better have a good lock. I can't imagine someone trying to slice through a fahgaddaboudit lock.
