Got a text message from a number I kind of recognize but don't -- it's don't buy gas on Friday. Checked the internet and see the "chain text message" is going around. Anyone see this?

It DOES NOT work. So you don't buy gas on one day. You are sure going to buy it the next aren't you? Just a fantasy the lefties throw out there. If you don't want to buy gasoline/diesel, don't buy Citgo or its products. The problem is not Citgo, the problem is who owns Citgo; PDV America Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Petroleos de Venezuela SA, the national oil company of Venezuela.

I always buy Citgo gas, because of all the people who sell gasoline, I think they are the least evil. But this is foo, so I don't think we should really discuss it too much unless it gets moved.

Considering my tank's 3/4ths full, I wasn't planning on buying gas till at least sunday...

It can work. If you use that day to stop buying gas altogether. Aside from that, it's not going to do much, if anything.

No. The only way it would 'work' is if you used that day to stop using gas altogether.

It doesn't work. Best thing to do is buy an electric car and quit buying gas all together. Sigh, if only our battery technology up to par.:(

I think "gas out" days end up on Snopes. As of now, they mean nothing but a dip in demand one day, and a spike the next.

To make it work, people need to just not use gas that day, so the purchase is not just made up at a later time.

As for gas companies, people do have a choice in the matter. I don't like Citgo, as I just don't feel like giving money to a government that is actively hostile to the US. For me, have considered buying gas from an X-Mart, where stomping on a distributer's head for a good price actually is positive, but I end up just buying from a Chevron station.

Well, it sounds like it's working out for the mobile service providers who are selling text messages.

This works for cyclists, unless you are a bicycle racer in which case you need the gas to drive to the bike races.

Yet another example of how bike racing is totally F'd and is the antithesis of everything else in cycling. You do have to love it.

You willl just end up buying more gas the next day.

If you want to make a difference, pick one day and commute on your roadie. That's what I plan to do. My office building has a gym shower and for the 2 years I've been here I have said I would like to commute on Friday. Well, yesterday I mapped a route and today I am going to drive it to see how it is.

It won't drive prices down but it will save me a day of driving per week if all I do is Friday.

But I can't do it tomorrow.

I think we should all get jersey's that say something like: "I get 25 miles/ burrito" on the back.
When we are out riding, maybe, just maybe, some of these SUV and Truck driving people will get the idea that bikes are a better use of our resources than are giant, gas swilling, huge hunks of metal. Maybe we can convince more people to start commuting via bicycle's that way.

ElJamoquio
05-01-08, 07:24 AM
Yeah... I'm confused.

If you don't know the difference between

1. PROCRASTINATING BUYING FUEL ON ONE DAY, AND INSTEAD USING FUEL FROM YOUR STOCKPILE

and

2. RATHER, NOT USING ANY FUEL ON THAT DAY (OR MONTH, OR YEAR) AT ALL rather than playing stockpile games

Then you're at an intelligence level where I cannot be of assistance to you.

This is a completely empty gesture.

As of 04/28/08, the average cost of a gallon of gasoline in CA is $3.83. The material cost of the crude is 73% of that at $2.83 (from here (http://www.energy.ca.gov/gasoline/margins/index.html)). Then there are about $0.65 in taxes and $0.31 from the refiner and then $0.09 for distribution. That $2.83 is a fixed cost and is only rising because we're competing for this resource on a largely global scale. Even if we were miraculously successful in temporarily reducing demand for gasoline, the demand for it and all the other petroleum products will be constant in the larger market. And every day that market grows larger as modernization spreads. As that market grows larger, demand increases, price increases. I think it's safe to say that you're looking at the cheapest gasoline you will ever see for the rest of your life.

Even if it is true, it is useless.

hos13

However, if we all steal gas they can't throw us all in jail. There would be no one to buy gas.

bluebottle1
05-01-08, 08:12 AM
These stupid "gas out" days fundamentally misunderstand the way that oil/gasoline is priced, anyway. In addition to what Pup explained above, price is not based on current demand (at least, not entirely) but upon replacement cost. It is a projection of future cost to put the same amount of fuel into the storage tank. That cost doesn't change based upon a one-day fluctuation in demand.

I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire one shot or none?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?
