Bicycle Mechanics - Choosing the right fender set...

Hi, all...
I'm a somewhat novice city commuter (Chicago), and I'm currently obsessing over which fender set to buy for my bike, which is an '89 Stumpjumper with 26X1.4 slicks...I am pretty much set on the Planet Bike Cascadia series, and I need to choose between the hybrid/touring model (45mm), and the ATB model (60mm)... 60mm seems a bit wide for tires that are only about 35mm, but these are designed specifically for 26ers, while the hybrid/touring model is the right width(45mm), but is advertised for up to 27 1/4's... too big?
I'm not sure what to do. I want the fenders to be effective, but I want them to look good, too, and I think narrower is better in that regard.
What do you think?

+1 If 60's will fit between the chain and seat stays thats what you need. I found an old bike in a thrift store for $1 with what used to be chrome fenders over 27" wheels. No way they would ever be chrome again so I prepped and painted them. Here they are on my late 90's Specialized CrossRoads.

They fit just fine with my 37X700c wheels and tires.

True... I guess more specifically I should ask if I will run into any trouble that I may not have anticipated with a fender designed for tires that are an inch and a quarter in diameter greater than mine. Obviously the wider fenders will be optimally effective, but if the more narrow ones would be just as effective, then I would rather use those.
Has anyone here used 27 1/4" fenders with 26X1.4 tires and had any issues, either aesthetic or mechanical?
(I know this is silly to obsess about, but apparently it has gotten under my skin...:o)

Thanks. So, I should be thinking more about what fits the frame than what fits the tires? That being the case, it appears that a 60mm fender would be a perfect fit... if a bit snug
