What the **** is going on in SSFG. For real?

A lot of people are turning what shouldn't have been a big deal into a huge, overblown, overdramatic deal.

It's rather unfortunate. I saw a lot of people who looked like they were going to be reasonable suddenly become very much not so.

[edit: And... this is in Foo, apparently. Huh.]

we're all being shut out. arguments, jokes, discussions, information, all shut off to "some of us" as others see fit.

just letting you know, in case you can't get back in.

see you at the races.

I agree its much to do about nothing.

Its the way its gone about. People don't like to be treated like kids. I understand the deleting of a post here and there, but thing just disappear, are edited, and people are banned with limited knowledge. You treat anyone like a child, and they will act like a child.

it's a shame FGG is boring. when i wasn't being "immature" i liked actually answering people's questions as best i could, and feeling like i was helping someone figure out the stuff i learned through trial and error. yeah, i can still log out and search if need be, but it will be different not being able to contribute.

While I have had my disagreements with the way this site is run, and still don't agree with some of the censorship, I don't think foo is the place to argue and hash it out. There are better forums for this topic.

From prior experiences in situations like this, a few things have been learned and/or determined. One, is that "Why was [user] banned?!?!" threads are never productive, and just turn into flamewars and that kind of thing. Also, it's not fair to the banned user to parade the details of their banning around for all to see and discuss in a giant, angry thread. This thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=388447) was created as a way to at least give people an idea of why a person was banned, and when/if they'll be back, hopefully to try to stave off such panics. The infraction system gives a person an automatic seven day ban if they accrue three points within a certain period, and makes it permanent if they make it to five. Deathhare merely picked up his third and got an automatic ban.

As for things disappearing, well... It seems that a lot of the people taking this way too hard, people blowing it out of proportion, and people just looking to pick a fight are now going out of their way to push buttons and make life harder for everyone in the forum. I haven't removed anything myself this evening, but there's a lot of objectionable images being posted, and a lot of threads that might normally pass as "joke threads" but are being taken a bit further.

same here. i'd rather start fresh than jump into someone else's ground like a refugee.

and i already went on a nite ride. and tomorrow i'm going to go on a morning ride. then at work i'll be bored just i won't be able to laugh with a bunch of other jokers in SSFG. then i'll take an afternoon ride home, then a nite ride again whenever i want to leave my house.

You are right a thread about a users banning isn't great for moral. I understand that but the jump from "a user being banned" to banning a ton of people / closing a forum to people is a bad idea and a huge leap.

Thats the problem. Thats how people will react. There is nothing you can do about that. There must be a better way to properly moderate discussions without taking peoples perceived freedoms away.

If people were banned, they would not be able to sign on or post. The list of banned members is in that link. There was no banning of a ton of people, really.

Closing a forum gives people a break.

Oh I'm sorry, we can argue semantics. A bunch of users cannot access the SSFG sub forum. Call it a ban, call it a "break", call it a garlic pancake, its still a bunch of users who are denied access to SSFG.

Saying its not a ban is a wonderful sugar coating new speak kind of b.s.

I'm not trying to argue, I'm trying to be clear. There IS a difference between being banned and NOT being banned.

Just curious though, were you really surprised about the denial of access?

Maybe this should be moved to User Assistance. This is not usual Foo material. Foosters don't like negativity here.

Usually Im understanding the whole mod thing is a thankless job, but you really did a bang up job. This plus the Tommasini thing.. good work. I already have a mother, I call her every few months and catch up, I don't need some internet forum moderator acting like one.

Siu Blue Wind

Where did you get this "mother" thing? I've tried to "mother" you?

You knew this was going to be closed because it was suggested, wasn't it? It's not like it was just suddenly closed or anything.

Your access to BF is not denied, so it's not the same thing. Don't be silly.

How did I do a "bang up job" here?

And as for the Tommasini thing...Thank you for the compliment.

i wouldn't say it was really suggested. it was another threat coming from brian that we wrote off like all the others he repeatedly made and still makes. sure, there has to be a bit of time allowed for moderator discussion before action, but not a lot of time. brian had threatened to ban several users repeatedly by with statements such as "looks like you made my decision for me" or word along those lines during an argument. yet he always turned chummy once someone backed down, or changed to topic of conversation to guns or motorbikes.

no one is gonna take a guy like that seriously. and in my opinion he should not be a mod.

I have been reading SSFG for about 9 months now, and I forget when I joined, sometime last fall or something. I came into the forum with the tone close to what it is now. So how is an user like myself supposed to know that joking around is a horrible offense in BF? kinda lame that I got booted from SSFG..

I rarely post. I enjoy reading. I enjoy reading the technical stuff as well as the funny stuff.
Being a not very active member-- this has still put a sour taste in my mouth. I believe that maturity could be passed around on both sides. I also believe that censorship of a forum defeats the purpose. Being a Moderator of a forum myself, I am disappointed.

If you all are complaining about being treated like children, then stop acting like them! Seriously, I've had multiple PMs in the last day saying that many are acting like they are in middle school again. And these SSFG regulars, not mods. We give SSFG a lot of latitude with the rules, we allow a lot of off-topic posts, joking around, etc. However when real question threads quickly start spiraling off topic, new members get bullied and run off, it's too much. Someone complained last night about the mods posting random things in their thread (about a banned user or about the SSFG shut out), talking to one another, etc. This happens all the time in there to new users (from what I've heard and seen, and I don't lurk that much). How do you think they feel, do they want to stick around, not likely.

I don't know how many people are locked out right now, haven't checked all the info this morning, but last I looked the list was pretty short. If you're one of the effected, take it like a man (or woman if you are one), and live with it for a month. You can either go ride your bike, enjoy other areas of the forum, find another time sink on the internet, or cause a massive stink about it. Guess which one isn't going to win you any points with anyone.

Or how about rather we were baited? A thread created called "SSFG Closing" with info about how its going to close for all the bad people that is left OPEN. Hmmmm I wonder where the list of people to ban came from? The thread? Or did you all analyze everyones post history and come to a conclusion? Which sounds easier?

A real dbag move.

Nice attempt at deflection. There was never a shortage of posts to consider, some members have just made it easier for us, that's all. If anyone loses access to SSFG, it's because of their posts. Time to take a little responsibility, even if pointing the finger is easier.
