Great Lakes - Maps for a Trip from Chicago to the South Michigan Shore?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm looking to plot a decent route for biking from Chicago to Union Pier, Michigan. I'd like to avoid roads unfriendly to bikers, but not to go too far out of the way. I imagine common routes have been established in the cycling community for this sort of trip. Can anyone refer me to a web page with good maps, or simply recommend good roads or an overall route to take?

Here is a google map of the trip plotted, obviously, for drivers.

Thanks,

Well, I think you need to go a little farther south when you reach Indiana, like south of 80/94. There are a large number of steel mills along the lake front from East Chicago to the other side of Gary and the traffic is murder around them. The roads can be dicy at best. Here is a link to some trails in Lake County, IN.
