Folding Bikes - Folder parts in toronto? looking for tires 16"

I noticed there are a few canadians on the forum and I have been having a tough time sourcing 16" x 1.75 (can i use 1.5?) tires that can do more than 50psi... not those crappy can-tire crap..

looking for something like a hookworm or other similar road tire that can do high psi...

help?

Have you been down to Urbane Cycles (http://www.ucycle.com/)?...they specialize in folding bikes and other oddities.

i know urbane is sorta the go-to for folders, but is that all the choices we have? i mean short of visiting all the places, was just wondering if someone had already found where to get things without waiting...!

Well which 16" tire size are you in need of 305 or 349?

I just put some Greenspeed Scorchers 40-349 on my Tikit and they can be inflated up to 100psi. The Schwalbe Marathons [35-349] that I replaced can be inflated to 85psi

You could just call Urbane and I'm sure they'd be happy to answer your question.

349 indicates the diameter of the rim the tire is going on not the width. You can get a variety of tires in 349 from 28mm to 40mm.

ok i guess im still green to the terminology. .its not 349.. i figure.

the stock tires are bulgy on the rim and its 16 x 1.75", so i decided to get marathon's that are 16 x 1.5"

so in all, it was $30/tire, Kenda kwests were $35 and comet's were $25.. definitely not as cheap as i thought 16" tires ever were..

the marathon's came with high recommendations, and offer more tread depth than either the kwests and much more than the comets.

true: Its true... it seems Urbane is the most accessible for folders. I modded my DT during the winter and sent off for some parts... the only other option is Urbane, but if they don't have it, you have to wait for the order to come in.

last time I was there (2 weekend ago) they had some 16s in schwalbes. Was looking at Marathon racers (the 20''s... but decided, I'll leave it until my kwest wear out).

Did you get the Kevlar belted version? If so, has it been holding up?

I had the non-belted version, which wasn't appropriate for NYC. But I'll be trying it with a liner soon.

seems there are 2 kinds of marathons, one is the marathon plus that has a thicker layer of, protection liner.. i got the normal marathons with the stock kevlar liner.

but guys, i got a bit of a problem...

in mounting the new tire (first time since i got off bmx's when i was 15... > 20 yrs ago) i found that i cannot get the tire, uh, centered on the rim..

look at between 9o'clock and 12'...

i looked at some how-to's and google video, but none mention mounting a tire this small.. and i don't get how it doesn't center itself.....??????

The tyre beads aren't seated. Inflate it to 100psi to get the beads seated, then deflate it to correct pressure. If that fails, add some talcum powder to the edges and try again. The pressure must seat the beads.

wow good eye, it is infact a ming-cycle taiwan domestic market strida 5, I compared all the parts, they are identical, wheels, downtube attachment, even crankset (with fainly visible "s" on the gear wheel side)
May even be a 5.1 or 5.x as I have noticed minor design improvements in the magnet holder rear wheel and handlebars, grips, brake components are easier to adjust, etc.

Just as with any component built product - like a laptop, not all product runs match piece for piece... i've seen many strida 5's with an assortment of brake discs - so that can't be used as a tell, just depends which manufacture can provide them with the least-expensive item that matches the specifications at the time of production..
mine os stamped taiwan, not china, but when it comes to bikes, i wouldn't sell china short.
