I set a goal last year to gain 10 pounds. The one year anniversary is today and despite hitting the weights regularly, supplementing an average of about 30g of protein/day to my diet, all I have to show is a measly 4 pounds. Muscle definition has increased but not bulk. I don't wanna be a muscle monkey, no sir, I just wanna fill in a bit, improve muscle endurance and prevent overuse injuries . I dont want to give up on my cardio fitness so I cant stop biking. Besides biking is fun and keeps me semi-sane. The area where I can gain weight that will be useful should be in my long legs, but try as I might, its pretty tough to get any muscle mass on there. Anyway, I think I am at the point of reconciling myself at being 140#s and deal with it. While I have never been one to languish over my body, I find myself oddly wanting to gain weight for some reason. Being an ectomorph sucks as well :(.

forgive me if I don't cry for you here. Try being an endomorph...I've been trying to drop 15 freaking pounds for 3+ years. I'm down a whopping 5 lbs over that entire time frame.
I got a good 20lbs you can have.

Gaining muscle weight, i would argue, is harder than losing fat weight.
I gained it for you. Stop by the house some time and I will punch you in the nose.
being over weight is over rated.
Just wait until you have a wife and kids, the weight will fly on.

If you want to bulk up the legs (via riding), I suggest wearing a backpack full of water bottles, riding the heaviest bike you can find, and do a bunch of climbing. Uhh, that is if Boston has any hills. Or you can do the obvious and hit the gym a few days a week.
I guess the grass is always greener on the other side.
No, carrying an extra 20 lbs of fat has long-term health consequences, so losing it is as much a matter of health as it is vanity. Your wanting to gain 10 lbs is pure vanity. You are healthy and fit. You are less likely to get heart disease or diabetes than someone struggling to lose fat. (Well sort of; if you eat crap in your attempt to gain weight, that can be bad too.)

I think you are a guy, right?
Clearly you were not eating enough. You have to eat a lot of food to gain weight.
I gained 15lbs of muscle in 4 months eating 4500-6000 calories a day. I went from 165-180lbs.
Check out www.wannabebig.com (http://www.wannabebig.com) for some accurate info on weight gain.
Or, you have a thyroid problem and you should ignore the above advice and consult a doctor.
And you are doomed by your screen name anyway, change it to beefcake69 and you'd be halfway there.
PS. I hate the endo/ecto morph crap. Thats 99% whiney baby talk.

I was in the same boat until I was about 25. I got married, and gaining 4-5 pounds a year became automatic. I think you're on the right track, but I think you might be working out too hard. You can get some ideas at www.menshealth.com - or you can take an extra day off your workouts each week, and have an extra slice of pizza every week.

Check on hills, heavy bike and gym.

While the heart aspect of things are better with lower weight, there ia some immune system impact that has become a tad more obvious to me. I fell sick a lot till I got into grad school. I was 125ish at that point and now that I am heavier, I fall sick less. But even now, compared to some of my heavier friends, I fall sick and the episodes seem more virulent. For eg, I was out for 5 days for eg with the flu versus 3 days on an average. There is some literature out there that relates low weight to repressed immune systems. I also think that if I gain weight I could avoid overuse injuries that I suffered from running initially but less so with biking.
But I am no saint, there is certainly some vanity in that I dont want to get jokingly teased any more or treated with consternation by the ladies .

Yup.

Thyroid porblem is a possibility, in fact doctors did bring it up when I was in HS but never tested it.

I would rather be an endo than an ecto. :) (I am in your class btw)
Skinny AND pale here. I gave up years ago trying to gain weight. I couldn't do it if I ate lead shot.

one word - Guinness. Just start on the diet of three beers before bed and than figure out how to change weight to muscle.
