Help! I have been searching and searching for a replacement for my BB- it totally froze up. I have a specialized rockhopper with aluminum frame. Maybe 1998 not sure. It's orange if that helps. I removed the old BB. It had a sticker with the specs which tore in half, but I can read that it's a 1.37x24 T and 73 mm shell. I can also read part of a number at the bottom ?9891. Is that a part #? There's no other markings except it says Specialized, Japan. It's a sealed splined cartridge. There's a left-handed thread on the main body which installs on the right and vice versa for the left obviously. Oh and I measured the spindle length at about 110 mm. Is there a comparable Shimano component I can get?
Thanks in advance,
Nancy

Go to your LBS and get a 73/110 bb. Also, be sure to get the same type of spindle, square or splined.

It's probably a 73 X 113. Go to the manufacturer's web site and find the specs for your bike, then go to one of the online vendors or a local shop and find one that size. Remember you have to get the one that matches your crankset, as in sqaure tapered, ISIS drive or Shimano spline. That's the 3 most common types. Truvativ makes an ISIS drive that works for both 68 or 73mm.

Thanks, I think I will get Shimano XT BB-UN73 Bottom Bracket.
They don't seem to have 110 but 113 probably isn't that different. I got rid of my front deraileur anyway- don't need it for commuting!
Now, where do I get antiseize? A hardware store? Is there an online bike part dealer that has this stuff- I'm lazy and not in a hurry- obviously.
Thanks again,
Nancy

Antiseize compound can be found in any automotive parts store. A little bit goes a loooong way (I've been working away on a small jar for more than 10 years now), and it will stain your clothing like nothing else has ever done! I've got one pair of sweatpants with silver smudges all over it.
I do not know about the UN-73, but I have found that several cranks, including a Sugino and a Shimano, do not seat fully/normally onto the UN-72 spindles, pushing the chainline unexpectedly far to the outside/right. Otherwise, the 73mm BB shell width and the 1.37x24 cup diameter/threading are indeed very common.

I agree with Dave. A little anti seize goes a long long way, for threads, and for cloths. One drop could do your entire wardrobe.
Get the smallest size you can at any auto parts store.

Thanks for the antiseize advice. I will be careful. Now I have one more question. What's the best way to clean the gunk off the bb shell threads before I install the new one? I was thinking some biodegreaser followed by alcohol to make sure it's really dry.
