Yeah, I took a look, but haven't posted. It's quite refreshing to see what you guys really think. And you wonder why I haven't responded to your PM?
My being shunned has certainly escalated my feelings.
East Hill,
I'm sorry you don't feel welcome in ssfg East Hill. I want you to know I wasn't typically one of the over the top posters (I had my moments) and I never had a problem with the notion to clean up ssfg. After all I'm not on the suspended list, couldn't have been that bad right? Anyway, I just disagree with the iron fist approach. If Jsharr or Cuda2k would have taken care of it, I'm sure the outcome would have been different. Honestly, in my previous exchanges with Brian via PM, they were pleasant. I was taken aback by all this.
Take care guys, enjoy your forums.

You know it's difficult for me to not enjoy anything to do with bicycles, and there are very few places where I don't feel welcome.
Unfortunately, SS/FG is one. I've just been questioned as to why I am now posting in SS/FG. Apparently it's impossible to believe that I might actually want to, and enjoy, riding a FG.
Not everyone, not every thread. But just enough to make me wonder why so much hate is disguised as 'humour'.
The discreet and polite mention of 'please don't do that again' doesn't seem to work. There are a lot of really nice people in SS/FG, but there are some really nasty people there who seem only to post in order to either mock someone, get a rise out of someone, or just stir up trouble.
If you feel like returning, please do.

If you'd like to see your fearless leader in action, see the website I have listed as my own. He made an appearance.
That's far more clever than I would have given you credit for.

I wish I could take it.
East Hill, please don't let a few abrasive individuals turn you of to fixed gear bikes, or the SSFG forum for that matter. Both can be a lot of fun. Having seen a few of your bikes I'm sure you would get a lot of enjoyment out of a fixie, and I've seen some really lovely mixte fixed gear conversions posted in the forum. I have a feeling you'd fit in there better than you imagine. I think you'll also find a warm welcome at the sanctuary most of the banned or alienated users from SSFG have migrated to.
edit: I'd love to leave a link, but apparently linking to other bicycle related forums is now prohibited. I'm sure you know how to find the place anyhow, and I think if you give the folks there a chance, you'll find them mainly decent folks. Even if they are rightfully angry, I've not seen many individuals display sort of open hostility we're being accused of having as a group.
Yes let's allow someone who doesn't even post in the fixed gear forum to moderate, based solely on his offer to do it. Well guess it can't be worse than our current moderators who don't even see it fit to send members a PM on exactly why you are banned for over a month from said forum.
Who the hell decided who to ban anyways? Oh operator, we don't like him let's ban him! Yes yes yes! <- this is the type of knee-jerk witch hunt attitude i'm getting. I mean if you can ban me for what i've said in the FG forum then you could've easily banned me 30 times over in all the rest of the subforums.
If this is how genuine posters are treated on bikeforums, you can go **** yourselves, seriously.
Operator...
You are among the most abrasive and rude individuals on Bike Forums and am sure it makes it hard for people to even pay attention to the good advice you offer up.
Do you talk to people this way in real life? When people speak to me this way, I walk away from them and don't engage in any kind of reasonable conversation. I don't have to take abuse. Neither should anyone else.
No, but that is the level of frustration I am currently at. No communication, just boom banned for who knows how long for who knows what, by who knows. Seriously, you want to wield the ban stick, how about giving some communication back? I mean real banned users even have their own thread with a declared reason.
When "genuine posters" post things like this on a fairly regular basis, we don't ask them to be moderators.
That's great, I haVe never asked for nor wanted to be a moderator. You will not find a single post where I've declared "I would like to volunteer to be a moderator or I would like to be one in the future".
If you're going to ban people on a whim, that's great just pm me saying so. Otherwise all i'd like to see is
1) an explanation why I was banned, specifically for which comments or what images
2) who banned me
3) an appeal

Yes I am, and if being correct most of the time is ban worthy then so be it. You have maybe 5 or 6 other people on the rest of this forum who can post valid advice about topics that don't lead people down unsafe or imporper paths. Ban them as well.
My post history is there for all to see,
Does this mean you're leaving?
No, are you?

Such ego...
There are hundreds of very knowledgeable people who frequent these forums and one should take a lesson from Sheldon brown who could always deliver sound information without being offensive.
I recall that even if he was correcting people (and you have been on that list a few times) he always did it in a very positive way which is the sign of a good teacher.
A lot of bike mechanics aren't know for their people skills and I struggle with this myself being a very task oriented person who functions best when there's peace and quiet in the shop.
Being able to repair and service bikes is one thing... communicating that knowledge requires a completely different skill set.

I am thinking very hard about having Dr. Deltron make my Raleigh mixte into a FG. I am serious about not feeling welcome, though. Perhaps I am so used to members being helpful and supportive, as in the C & V forum, that I can't adjust to people really thwacking newbies just for being newbies.
Yet, you know how much I love my bicycles. I am always looking to expand my enjoyment of both my cycling, and the people I know who also love cycling. There are definitely some members in SS/FG who are welcoming, kind, and knowledgable, and I really enjoy reading their posts and learning from them.
But my soul is saddened when I see someone's girlfriend mercilessly photoshopped, or a moderator abused beyond belief because of things she can not control. This is enough to make me uneasy about posting. Even at the other site, there are still people who don't understand why it was so disrespectful to attack someone's girlfriend, or someone's sexuality.
I appreciate virtually all of you. You have all been quite kind and helpful when I've needed assistance--but yet there are some instances when I cringe to see what some of the members have said to new people.
It's not a perfect world, and we are all doing the best we can.
Please don't feel unwelcome here--at least, don't feel that I am not welcoming.

You know the thwacking newbies thing is kinda funny to me, not because it's funny to thwack on newbies, but because many of the poeple who seem to do the thwacking were newbies not so long ago themselves. I really haven't been around these forums that long, and I've seen newbies go from asking the sAme old questions to antagonizing the latest batch of newbies for asking the same old questions.
It's not everyone that does that, but it seems there's always someone around to do it. Just like I shout "don't feed the trolls in vain at my screen knowing someone will take the bait, each time I see a "how do I convert my junker into a cool fixie thread I KNOW someone's going to post "use the search".
Snobbery exists in all the forums, though I admit it's worse in some than others. I fear the road forum for the same sort of thing. Say the wrong thing in there and your likely to get attacked, but I know that just because there are snobs and jerks in that forum, they are not all snobs and jerks. It's the same in SSFG, it's got it's own weird culture, and coming in it's easy to be intimidated. Sometimes it's hard to tell the joking from the serious arguments, and some people in there are clearly never going to be my best buddies, or yours or whatever. C & V is an unusually friendly forum, not just for bike forums, but for the internet in general. I've run accross a few others that friendly. Often what they have in common are older posters. Most of us DO settle down a bit with age, and it does take some of us a bit longer to learn decent social skills. Generally it's a youthful bunch over in ssfg, so you might have to cut us some slack because some of us get a little weird around girls. I think if we explicitly ban pigtail pulling and bra snapping things might settle down a little in there. ;)
Oh AND you'll have a lot of fun on a Raleigh Fixte. I say you do it and be sure and post up some pics in SSFG. I'd bet a set of GENUINE Phil Wood wheel bearings that folks over there would appreciate it.
I am thinking very hard about a Raleigh Fixte. It's going to be a beautiful red colour when it's done :) .
I will keep your words in mind, and try to venture a little more often into SS/FG and have some fun.
