Hi. I have just recently started riding again after a long absence, 20+ years. I have a 97 Diamondback Wildwood that is labeled as a MTB. The newer ones are now called 'Comfort Bikes' with a few changes. Mine has 26 x 1.95" Kenda K-831 tires which I find a little too aggressive for street riding which is what I am doing, I have no intention of going off road. My question is, what would be a good street tire in that size for casual recreational riding? I have looked online at various tires but the selections seem overwhelming along with wide price variation. I don't want to spend a small fortune for two tires. Any suggestions?

Kenda is a generic manufacturer. Their tires should be fine.

Biketiresdirect.com is an inexpensive place for tires. You should also get a spare tubes, a pump, tire levers and patch kit if you plan on changing/fixing on your own.

26x1.5 to 2.0 should be fine for what you want to do. They have plenty of tires that they term "City" or "Commuter". They will have a relatively smooth tread and will generally be higher pressure. You should be able to get a new set for $40 or less.

Vittoria, Continental, Schwalbe are but a few of the very good brands available.

You will thank yourself if you stick to a Kevlar based slick style tire. It will flat out less and ride very smooth.

I ordered the Marathon tire, put them on yesterday and went for a ride. Wow, what a difference. They seem to provide a very smooth and a little faster ride although speed is not what I'm after. I don't think I had to work as hard either but that's probably psychological. Thanks for recommending these, I'm sure I will enjoy them for a long time, at least until I buy my next bike.
