Well, I just moved the image into GIMP and checked the edges, etc at max zoom in and I sure don't see any indications of feathering or partial pixels. If it's shopped, it was done by a real master. ;) No variances in lighting either.

yeah - the atmospheric haze/distortion between the people and the shark looked about right to me also.

Yeah I found the snopes on that too, but enroute to finding that, I found some gorgeous (real) pics of people swimming with a whale shark by a bad ass photographer by the name of Justin Lewis (http://www.justinlewis.com/). Here's the page with the shark pics:
