Bicycle Mechanics - Noob needs clarification...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Looking to buy a reusable link for my chain to make servicing it easier, and most links specify for an 8, 9 or 10 speed chain.
Can I assume that 8, 9 or 10 refer the number of cogs on the rear cassette? For example, an 8 spd would mean 8 cogs on the rear cassette.
Is this right?
