Bicycle Mechanics - Crank puller question (tool question)

I have a crank puller designed for standard square BB's. It is a "cheaper" one of the pricepoint.com variety. It seemed to work great for all of my applications of square BB from mid-nineties to the present.

The problem I am running into is that on older bikes (I am working on a mid-eighties Schwinn World Sport) the tool (the internal post) doesn't "screw out" far enough to be able to turn the threads of the external part onto into the cranks. On the newer bikes the BB is recessed enough for the puller to screw in and then pull. On the older bike the BB "axle" protrudes further and the doesn't allow enough space to get the tool on.

Does this make sense?
Is this an issue with the tool? I am wondering if a better tool unscrews further so that the extracting post is further recessed.

Any help?

I expect the Schwinn has a "nutted" bottom bracket spindle so there is a threaded stub that sticks out of each end of the spindle and may be the obstruction. Nutted spindles were often used on cheaper bikes instead of the more expensive "bolted" type.

I have a Park crank extractor and it works with nutted spindles too so your crank tool may be the problem.

You just explained my situation perfectly! So, the basic park crank puller should do it? I have never seen anything in tool descriptions for nutted or bolted.
