Jackrabbit Slim's and Big Kahuna Burger, in association with You'd Dig It The Most Productions are proud to present:
CyLowe’s Inaugural BFNIC ‘Double or Nothing’ Metric
When: Saturday May 31st 8:00 am meet up, 8:30 roll out.
Where: Uphill Grind Coffee/Bikes (http://www.uphillgrind.net) in Cross Plains, WI. Map to start (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=1827+Bourbon+Rd,+Cross+Plains,+WI+53528,+USA&ie=UTF8&t=p&ll=43.115332,-89.636335&spn=0.03045,0.064459&z=14&iwloc=addr) (park in back of building!).
What: 63 or so miles of very hilly roads in HHH territory
Why: Because they are there
The tentative route. MapMyRide version (http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/wi/cross-plains/366900797083) (subject to change slightly, but not by much)
The tentative route. Printable map version. (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc205/cylowe97/2008%20Cross%20Plains%20Ride/cl97DoubleNothingMap.jpg)
Cue Sheet (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc205/cylowe97/2008%20Cross%20Plains%20Ride/CLRideCueSheet.jpg). Contact numbers will be added at time of ride.
The route is loosely based on the 100k Horribly Hilly Hundreds, with some variations here and there.
Climbs up Sutcliffe, Pinnacle, Lakeview, Mounds Park Rd, Garfoot, and Observatory are sure to have the lungs and legs searing.
Optional challenge up Mounds Road to the top of Blue Mound midway through the ride.
Optional challenge up Barlow Road near the end of the route.
This is an arsekicker of a route. If you’re training for the HHH or DLD or other challenge ride, this is one for you.
Unlike other BFNIC rides, this one will NOT loop back to the start to refuel during the route. Plan for one rest stop / regroup in Blue Mounds where there is a convenience store at the base of Mounds Road.
Note on speeds A groups/B Groups/Whatever: With the natural variation in climbing speeds among those who may attend, this ride will be much less social and more personally challenging. We will have contact information in case anyone is lost or broken down, but at this point we will NOT have anyone officially riding as a sweep on this ride. Following the route on rural roads is ultimately up to the individual rider.
Note on supplies: Riders should be able to supply themselves for 30+ very hilly miles without a chance of refueling along the route in Blue Mounds.
More details and finalized course map as they become more concrete. I will edit this first post with details as they come in. (last edited Sunday May 11)

This was taken into consideration, I can assure you, and no disrespect was meant to the very excellent Udder Century.
Heck, I may ride out to the start of the Udder and give it a go, perhaps just the first part as a recovery. There will be no sub 5 hour century from me that day, but sacrifices must be made for long term goals, no?
How we doin, baby?
I gotta go pee! I want to go home.
Just hang in there, baby. You're doing' great. Ringo's proud of you and so am I. It's almost over.

I'm going to move into a protective bubble until the ride, just to make sure. I'm bringing a 34t chainring and guads of carbon fiber.
This is a day before the mysterious "Sussex Criterium", which I'll probably be doing as well.

Don't worry JB, I'll be in the C group to "sweep." You've seen me climb. It's slow and spinny in a 30/23 combo.
The song I use for suffering is from one of the Christmas specials..."Just put one foot in front of the other..."

I often have this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8236547341601740391) song running through my head on long climbs. (of which I haven't seen [m]any this year) It all started when I heard the song on the way to the DLD 2 years ago, and would proceed to have it stuck in my head over the course of the subsequent 300k. So, apparently an association was formed in my brain.

This is a single day thing for me. Drive up early, punish myself in the hills, drive home that afternoon.
Not to say that others who feel like making a weekend of it in Madison can't do so, but coming on the heels of the New Glarus social fun, I thought this one would be more of a stand alone ride.

NP - carpool would help immensely. I normally don't give a f about gas and how much it costs (I will still drive so why care), but it is truely getting to be on the expensive side. Room for 1 more. CyLowe, Kimbercop, Voldemort....anyone is welcome to the spot.

I'll backseat drive. You know my sadistic laugh by now.
By the way, we're going to keep emphasizing that this ride is very challenging.
Though these were taken after 130 and 107 miles respectively, this is what aham23 and I looked like at the top of Blue Mound last June:

As CyLowe mentioned it is not for the faint of heart. This route will have more climbs than most rides that use the word "Hilly" in their title.
Again, I don't climb, but I love punishment. I will be there because it if climbing that I do not do well.
I think what CyLowe is trying to get at is....don't come if you don't like riding alone or would need to bail out because it is too hard.
There doesn't appear to be any drop rule and that means everyone would be on their own. The only way I would see aham and CyLowe after the first 0.5 mile mark would be becasue they would need me to get back into the car and drive them home.
That said...if you are a slow climber, but like to push it on the flats and downhills....you may just end up riding next to me.

Thank you for putting it bluntly. We'll have contact information in case anyone is lost or broken down, but at this point we will NOT have anyone officially riding as a sweep on this ride (I'll add this in to the original post).
Also, I am working with CPclydesdale, who runs the excellent Uphill Grind Bicycle & Coffee Shop (http://www.uphillgrind.net/) in Cross Plains, on some refinements and clarifications to the route I whipped up.
Mmmm! g**damm, Jimmie! This is some serious gourmet s***! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some freeze-dried Taster's Choice right, but he springs this serious GOURMET s*** on us! What flavor is this?

I for one am already planning the wimp refinements shortcuts involving Meadowvale Rd and Union Valley Road...but then again I might be riding to the start which would mean I would just head east on Mineral Point.

Wimp refinements are quite alright. I've cut off parts of the HHH 200k route and Dairyland Dare 200k routes when I found I just didn't have the legs. Thankfully, there are spots to make this happen throughout the ride. And it's part of why I put the Barlow climb as an optional climb/descent torture/treat near the end of the ride.
Knowing one's own limits and options are quite important on a ride like this.
Check out the big brain on CyLowe97. Shouldn't this be the royal with cheese metric? I certainly don't know what 62 miles are.
Nice ride. If I'm in, I'll sweep. I'm slow and know the area, the perfect combination. :)

OK you guys in Wisc. Listen up, please! Would any of you welcome a couple of ohio boys to your little sufferfest if we were stupid enough to drive up there? Welcome, as in, have a spare place to lay our weary heads? the price of gas alone is more than most good hotels, so that would make it more of a possiblility and this would be a definite MAYBE at best.

That's the spirit, iab! But the official name is the 'Double or Nothing' Metric. It's a tribute to aham23's gambling tendencies when he rides up steep hills. And my lust for free beer.

As for the ride, I'm in. Depending on how I'm feeling I may try to gut it out using my standard double crankset but if I'm not feeling it I'll swap to my compact. I was hoping to keep it in reserve until the HHH...
Seeing as how everyone else is sharing their pics fron HHH '07 here's me. I was in tears after GRINDING my way up into blue mound state park. Damn was that ride brutal. Afterwards I felt like a couple of hard pipe hittin' individuals went to work on me with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. You know, got medieval on my ass.
