OK you guys in Wisc. Listen up, please! Would any of you welcome a couple of ohio boys to your little sufferfest if we were stupid enough to drive up there? Welcome, as in, have a spare place to lay our weary heads? the price of gas alone is more than most good hotels, so that would make it more of a possiblility and this would be a definite MAYBE at best.
I'd be willing to put you guys up either in the spare bedroom or on an air mattress. The downside is that I live near Milwaukee so there would be a 90+ minute drive back afterwards (looks like this would be a bit of a detour for you too). That and you'd have to put up with the three cats, one of which is a known thief.
yep, this is me in june after 132 miles 12,000 feet of climbing and no walking. little birdies suggested a compact. i went with a double. next to running 26.2 miles in 96 degree heat with limited water it was the most difficult thing i have done to date.

I am not sure STUPID is the right word.....Geez it's only a 8 hour drive up there.....then punish ourselves with a bunch of Cheeseheads then drive 8 hours home......what's STUPID about that?

Middleton, WI hotels. You wil be less than ten miles away. They are all relatively new.
Extended Stay on the westside Madison is a good price. I've stayed there so I can attest that it is fine and it is near restaurants, shopping, and a Trek Store. Anything that says Madison West or West Towne or Middleton is going to be a good location. Do not stay in any Madison South or East areas. South is sketchy and East is too far. City of Verona would be ok today, but a slightly longer drive to Cross Plains (15 miles, maybe?). Cross Plains is just a little village and I don't it has any hotels. And there wouldn't be anything to do there anyway.
FYI Toledo to Madison is about 400 miles if that helps. I can get there in about 6.5 hours if there are no problems in Chicago.

So let me get this right, drive 3 hours to meet up with the BFNIC for 10 minutes only to say goodbye as they take off down the road and then spend then next 4-5 hours riding around the very hilly back roads of Wisconsin by myself, only to hope I can get back to my car in the empty parking lot??
Sounds like I might just go for the udder and listen to the horror stories. I might even be able to stay with the group on their recovery ride udder until the first rest stop.

If you're into camping you could camp at either Governor Dodge or Blue Mound State Parks. They are close by and cheaper than a hotel. Reserve a spot now, though.

It happens. Sometimes. I made it from Elkhart to Madison in under four hours in two occasions. It was a miracle. I didn't even have to drive like a FIB'er. Then there was the time it took 5.5 hours to go Gary.
IAB - there is absolutely no way you would be sweeping behind me. Not only am I slow climber, I don't exactly scream down the hills (but do stay in a straight line, knowing I will be passed). I don't have the advantages of gravity or the temerity of some of you. I did once max at 47 at a hill about 3 miles from Cross Plains (into pea gravel, no less).
JB - good suggestion. There is also camping at Dane County parks. www.countyofdane.com. Indian Lake is not too far.

You can definitely hang with me. Be good to chat again! I want a strong showing from the B group. I got some DLD plans we could chat about...a little strategy.
I definitely need some strategy. I can still remember the last steep climb where there was and eery silence. Only heavy breathing and heart monitors going off like crazy. I think we were lucky to get rain instead of the afternoon sun and 90 degree weather.

Yes, I'll have map/cue sheets available. I'll link it in the first post when it gets finalized. I'm currently working with a few local experts on refining the ride. What's currently linked is only tentative and may change in the coming weeks.
Let's get down to brass tacks, gentlemen. If I was informed correctly, the clock is ticking, is that right, Jimmie?

I might see you scouting the course as I'll be doing this route:

with a group on Saturday. It's stages 4&5 of the HHH. I've got training rides every Saturday until the HHH, so I probably won't be able to make this ride.

Hey, our ride could easily be a training ride for the HHH, you know. Well, 'easily' is probably not the right term there. :o
I thought about doing this ride from the top of Blue Mound like the training route you posted, but figured it would be nice to have that climb in the middle of the route as an optional. This is telling about my inner-flatlander more than anything, really, since I know what Mounds Road does to the brain and legs and lungs and heart at the end of a ride. Yow.
Look for the fool on the blue Felt toiling away on Sutcliffe, Pinnacle or Lakeview.
That's how you're gonna beat 'em, Butch. They keep underestimating you.

Alright. I rode the tentative course today. Well, all but the optional Barlow climb/descent. My legs were noodles by that point and I was having fun flying down the wonderful descent of Observatory. And I was jonesing for a cup of coffee. Without the Barlow option, it was 60.2 miles, which I rode in almost exactly 4 hours of on-bike time.
I will reiterate: This route is tough. I forgot some of the places where the roads pitch up outlandishly near the crest, like on Zweitler, county road JJ, Braun, Garfoot, and Mineral Point. But it was fun. A few roads still had a bit of sand and a few spots where tractors use the road leaving mud/dirt especially in the first half of the ride, but nothing to change the course. The downhill on Knudson is a bit sketchy with sand and one very small (10 foot?) section of gravel, but as long as people use caution and don't do anything like brake hard or try to ride it on top of each other, it should be fine. Anyone thinking they don't want to do that can skip the Blue Ridge/Knudson/Lakeview portion by staying on county road K.
And I climbed all of Mounds Park Road and the final kick up Mounds Road to the top of Blue Mound without stopping. Yeah! I timed those two roads. It was a 23 minute climb for about four miles. The first mile of Mounds Park Road is nothing serious, even having some downhill sections, but the second mile is where the fun and/or pain begins.
Stahr, I saw a bunch of riders coming down Mounds Park Rd as I was getting to Ryan Road a little after 9 am. Was that your group?
I started/ended at Uphill Grind in Cross Plains. Enjoyed a tasty scone, a double chocolate chip cookie, a massive café au lait, and some good conversation with CPClydesdale. It's going to be a great place to end the ride.
I'll finalize cue sheets and maps in the next few days. We'll start buzzing about roll calls and such, too. And don't forget to sandbag, everyone. :D
This place? A coffee shop?
Why not? Nobody ever robs restaurants. Bars, liquor stores, gas stations... you get your head blown off sticking up one of them. Restaurants on the other hand, you catch with their pants down. They're not expecting to get robbed. Not as expectant anyway.

Stahr, I saw a bunch of riders coming down Mounds Park Rd as I was getting to Ryan Road a little after 9 am. Was that your group?
We left the park around 9am, but our group(s) should have turned down Ryan Rd. There were probably 30-40 riders split across 5 groups. I had a great ride. Blue Mounds nearly killed me (as usual) but I made it up without stopping, but it was the end of my ride. There was a lot of sand on the ride I did, but due to very little traffic on the downhills, easy to avoid. County Rd T into Barneveld is still horrible, but now it's down to one lane in a couple of sections.
I did see a guy on a Felt at the top of Big Blue, but I think it was Red and he had no idea what I was talking about when I said BFNIC.
