Save on the first day? Ha!
Pray the pack is at a casual pace and you just sit in on the second day for this double.
Of course, there are a few places to cut the first day short by a few miles and a few thousand feet of climbing, but you wouldn't do that, would you, ColorChange?
[insert sound of evil laugh right here]
day two is the Udder Century?
if so, i am sure it will be a nice little recovery ride AKA 5 hour century. no big deal. :)

It is easier to vut the century short.
I will be looking for tow ropes that day.

CyLowe,
Just because of that evil laugh I'm not staying for beers tonight. I need to lose about 5 lbs. of fat before I haul my lazy fat arse up and down hills for a hundreds of miles. :deadhorse2:
Oh no wait ... I have another idea ... more gear! I just ordered SRAM Red brifters!
Buaaaa ahhhha hhaaaa.
I'm pathetic!

i should probably invest in a compact crank for these types of rides. it will probably pay for itself on the dairyland dare...

Bummer! I'm out for this ride on 5/31. Some friends are having a pre-wedding brunch in Evanston, IL (a destination wedding we're not invited to... thank god!) Oh well, at least my wife and I can head into Chicago and make a day of it. Long time no see, Cafe Iberico...
I plan to ride the route solo on 6/1. I'll be sure to read your ride reports and replay all of the highlights in my head as I envision them happening.

Uh oh! More trouble. Now my bottle cage is loose and my cleats are showing signs of wear.
This is really a tragedy, because I wanted to ride fast, but with this serious trouble, I'll probably be wishing there was a sag wagon.
PS
This just in: Today I ate cream cheese and now my brake lever is scratched! That's not going to help either.

I'm taking all the cable end crimps off my bike for lighter weight and better aero. Better cut the cables as short as possible too.
Damn, shouldn't have given away more of my secrets.:thumb:

CC, you know I did the route last weekend and just yesterday discovered that I still had that spend CO2 cartridge in my saddle bag.
I'm going to blame that for my sluggishness up the hills.

No worries, Gary. What we need you guys to do, though, is organize some sort of Great Lakes century ride that ends at Cedar Point.

In the spirit of all the sandbagging going down, I should mention that I almost forgot that I signed up for the Madison half-marathon this coming week. Between that and all the energy I expended commuting to work this week in support of National Commute To Work This Week week, you just may find me in a ditch drooling and pooping on myself a few miles in. Go ahead and laugh, but that 8.7 miles each way I rode to work this week is a lot trickier than it seems, especially that 2 mile section along the MUP
^^^^ half marathon. good for you, but you still have two weeks and plenty of hills to train on to get prepared to crush our souls.
now, if you lived in the flatest of flat counties and were running a 10 mile race the weekend BEFORE this ride you would have a legit sandbag statement. instead of a classic wow is me BFNIC one :).
by the way i reside in Will County, IL and will be running the Soldier Field 10 miler on 5/24.
what?? :lol::lol:

Actually, I mis-spoke in my post, the 1/2 in Madison is the Sunday before the ride (5/25). I'm spending this weekend (17-18) preparing to crush souls and playing with my kittens
^^^^ now we are talking. half marathons and crushing kittens. you will be ready for sure. later.

I've got a little bit of a conflict. My club, SpinDoctors Cyclewerks rides as a group for the Udder Century (didn't find out until Saturday). There is NO WAY I will be able to pound hard on this ride and be able to maintain 20+ for 100 miles with SpinDoctors.
So either I blow them off on Sunday or skip this one on Saturday. Hmmmmm.
What are everyone's plans after the Udder?

Interviewer: What's your prediction for the fight?
Clubber Lang: My prediction?
Interviewer: Yes, your prediction.
Clubber Lang: Pain!
last year we rode it at 19 mph clip. i would think it would be a bit slower based on the effort we will be putting in the day prior. however, i know this much, if someone is feeling spunky, and someone can follow, then someone will, and it could be ugly. i mean fun.

No offense to Spin Docs here, but you have to blow them off on Sunday. The Udder Century is supposed to be enjoyed, not some killer conquest club training sufferfest.
If I'm paying $27 to ride the Udder, I'm stopping at all the stops, eating lots of food, staring at all the cool bikes just left sitting there, and trying to catch a glimpse of Speedy McAwesome (if he bothers showing up, that is. apparently he was there last year (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?p=4571316&highlight=#post4571316))
In sum, Saturday climb and descend; Sunday enjoy the century.
Edit to add: Speedy, if you're out there, you are more than welcome to join us in Cross Plains. I'll buy post-ride espressos for you and and your ladyfriend(s). C'mon man!

Recursive ... I've got to agree. Can any of you other guys shed details on Speedy's numbers? That's pretty strong work for a paceline.
Any who you crappin Cy, it sure sounds like most of you guys suffered plenty with near 5 hour centuries last year.
CyLowe97
05-19-08, 01:10 PM
CC, we suffered because of the powerful t-storm that ripped through the northern McHenry County area about 3/4 through the route. And I was nowhere near a 5 hour century that day, having enjoyed the first leg of the route riding with a newer rider who was only doing the 30 mile route.
I don't think you're going to see more stats than what Speedy reported there. He's more cerebral than scientific about his riding from what I've been able to gather. I think he eschews all of the stats being thrown around with the HRMs and cadence and GPS devices. Who knows. Nobody ever seems to catch up to him or else he just skips the rides altogether. C'mon Speedy McAwesome! Show up, dammit!

Cue Speedy.....
We pounded the Udder out last year. I am in much better form this year than last year. I am climbing better than I ever have, but that doesn't mean much.
I am recovering better than ever.
All this being said I have not put in any stellar length rides this year. Daily commutes are 50, but split up over the work day. I have ridden some 40 milers. The Spring classic turned into 50ish for me if I remember correctly.
I have yet to put in a good long day.
Saturday hills will kill me.
I might recover extremely well (prediction),
Sunday century - up for grabs. If there is a line and someone willing to work....I will be wheel sucking.
If I smell a doughnut at an upcoming rest stop...I might pull as well.
I had one doughnut last week. First one in probably 4 months or so. ....
.....dreaming about it now.....

4:26 was the first number I've ever heard in reference to Speedy. (other than #1) The only detail I can provide about a 4:26 century is that someone was sweating. I'm getting cramps just thinking about it.

most of us finished a bit behind mr speedy at 5:15 for the century. most of the BFNIC bunch that were there last year seem to be in better form this year.
last year shider, inputeflangman, and cyclpsycho really drove the group. toss in some agression towards a couple tri dudes and it was a fast & furious effort. the storm around mile 75 really slowed us down a bit too.
the unknown is how hard will the effort be on Saturday and how well will you recover.
shortly after this fabulous weekend of riding i am boarding a boat for some gawd awful 7 day cruise with the in laws. so, i plan to go at each ride with what ever i got in the tank. i love a good challenge and 162 miles with some climbing tossed in there sounds like one to me. :D

OH, please....you can do both. Just hang with me the first day and don't trash your legs. You'll be fine for your club ride the next day. I have a huge running week planned this week so I'll be tired on Saturday.

and i just remembered how freaking hard some of these climbs are .
i am having flashblack of that climb into Blue Mounds. the part before the turn up into the park area. it just goes on and on forever with barely a false flat.
climbing 2 plus miles to get up and into Blue Mounds is going to hurt and it is NOT even the finishing effort. ouch.

The 200k HHH goes up the east end of Sutcliff, 50+ mph coasting down the west end of Sutcliff. Tasty.
The HHH only climbs Barlow Rd. It's the nasty brat right after the first rest stop. You want to ride down Barlow on the Double or Nothing? You gotta climb up Barlow on the Double or Nothing. No freebies.
