Anyone ever seen or used Tektro 872 canti brakes? There is an auction for them on the bay now:

The strange thing is that the return spring does not protrude out the base of the brake arm so that it can go through the little hole (or one of three holes, usually) next to the boss. Instead the base of the brake arm has two sections there is a spring between the two sections. But what keeps the base part of the arm from spinning on the boss? I suppose if the bolt as tightened down it would tend to hold it in place, but it hardly seems to be capable of holding it in place through many twists and torques of that arm.

The spring is attached to the arm and an internal nut. The nut gets set in place when you tighten the bolt down so spring tension is adjusted by turning the nut the spring is attached to. It's not super-common but that's a usual way of making cantis.

I had some cantis like that before and it works like you described it. or rather, for me it didn't work just like you suspect. you use a cone wrench to hold the base at the position you want it to stay when you tighten the bolt. I was much happier after I swapped out my brakes for some that use those holes to hold the return spring.

Ive got a tektro brake that is similar.
But has smooth alloy arms. Not that machined style.
the brake pad holders are purple...

Ive seen BMX U brakes that have the spring away from the frame. They stay tight mostly.

I believe that these are NOS from the ninties. Actually, they look really nice. The anodized versions are the best looking though.

I picked mine off of eBay. They are a very cool looking brake. As an earlier poster mentioned thatyou have to use a cone wrench to turn the spring carrying boss to give you the right tension in the right direction. (Confusing, yes). They were a little bit of a challenge to set up but I am happy with them. I use mine with Nashbar road levers and they modulate well. They are not grabby brakes but they do the job.
