Mountain bikes a plenty in that price range, a few hybrids, some comforts and not much else unless you go used. Fill us in and we'll toss a few ideas at you.

I bought an '07 Schwinn Le Tour GS from Performance Bike Store last month on sale for $500. Aluminum frame, carbon fork, 24 speed, Sora STI brifters, Tiagra RD. After 400 miles I am vey happy with my purchase.

If you are looking for an MTB, Performance has an Ironhorse Warior 3.0 for $460. Aluminum frame, Marzocchi fork, Deore FD, Deore RD, Deore shifters, Deore disc brakes. I had planned to buy it but decided to go with a road bike.

That's probably "THE" question. MTB, ROad bike, Hybrid, etc? MAny vet clydes here turned me on to the HardRock Sport (no-disc) for around $300. I got my FCR3 for under 400.
