How can we communicate them without writing them?

Maybe I should send you an MP3

#1 Don't cause an accident

Hi,

If you "cause" it, is it really an accident? ;)

How about:

Don't put yourself in a position where you can cause a crash. :)

You can cause an accident... just not on purpose.

How bout if we start with the written rules, which is what I think the OP really wants to know.

1. The guy in front of you has the right of way, he can do whatever he wants, he can go all over the road (not that he SHOULD) so be ready for anything.
2. Don't use your brakes hard. You are almost always feathering the front but try not to slam it on hard.
3. There is no such thing as calling "inside" while going around a corner.
4. Pinning someone against the curb in the final straight is dirty pool, but if you are in front feel free to swing wide and use the whole road in the corner exit if you need to. If someone is outside of you and overlapping your wheel, too bad for him.
5. If you are about to die and the pack is strung out, tell the guys in back of you and raise your hand so they get around you before you open up a huge gap.

+1

Also, I love when people move up the outside and point that their coming over, like on a group ride. I always respond, just cause your pointing doesn't mean I have to let you in.

You're right. It's just hard to remember them all.

Maybe I should write them down.

3. There is no such thing as calling "inside" while going around a corner.

This bears repeating, both because it drives me nuts and because the idiots who do this and then expect you to just move over for them can make every corner a dangerous experience. I had a guy say "on your outside," at a crit a few weeks ago, then proceed to try and ride around me when I was already on the most outside line. He practically ran himself into the curb, then yelled at me (after slamming on his brakes and ducking in behind me) to "watch your outside!" I informed him that it was his job to watch his inside. What, do I ask the guy to MY right to move over so this guy can move past me? Anyway, if there's room to move up a position on the inside or outside of a corner, go ahead and do it. If there isn't or you think it's questionable, don't announce your intentions and expect anyone to move out of your way.

Yes, this does really bug me, why do you ask? :p

On an uphill sprint finish last week I was on the right side of the course, pretty much in the marbles, and the guy behind me kept yelling "on your right." I wanted to see him after the race to ask what he thought all the yelling was going to accomplish but I missed him.

How dirty is this? Is it just bad form? Dangerous? Breaking the rules? Or just frustrating if you're on the receiving end?

I talked to a guy who won a Pro/1/2 crit a couple of weeks ago by doing this and he made it sound like it's just part of the game.
