I am finally deciding to leave my v-brake ways behind. I am trying to figure out whether I want to go with hydraulic discs or bb7s. What is the advantage of hydraulics? As far as I can figure they are more expensive and working on them seems obnoxious.

hydrualics feel the same every time you squeeze them. it's so worth it if you have long downhills. with that being said and seeing as you are from the midwest, you could probably save some money and go with the bb7s.

Hydraulics are the way to go.

If you have the means, I highly recommend picking some up.

for what it's worth, I have XTR hydros, with 160mm rotors, and I adore them. They grab like no other and are very consistent. I've only had to bleed them once after I bought the bike, and since then, they have functioned flawlessly for me. I bled them because one lever felt a touch squishy. Bled, and bingo, both tight and good to go.

On a 1-10 scale for brake feel with 1 being V's and 10 being hydros, I'd put mechanical disks at an 8.

I love my BB7's and don't really have a desire to upgrade but if I had the disposable income I'd go with hydros.

I swapped out my mechanicals (Avids, and they were nice) for a set of hydros (Hope mini) several years ago because I was tired of the maintenance of changing cables. You can't beat the smooth feel, and power of hydros. The Avids are nice, and if you don't mind swapping or cleaning/lubing cables, it may be the choice for you. As for me, I will never go back.

Had my Avid Juicy 5's since 2005...they've been on 4 bikes now. I love them.

Only thing I'd change about the J5's is that I'd turn them into Code 5's b/c I have a surplus of testosterone that's waiting to be used.
