Hi all,

Just curious as to whether the operation of replacing the steerer of a steel fork and welding or brazing a new one is commonly done. How are these forks made in the first place? Are they one piece or is the steerer added later in the process?

Thank you for your information. As indicated by my question I'm a total noob when it comes to frame building.

Ticycles (http://www.ticycles.com/store/repair.html)charge $31.50 for a steerer replacement (which seems a bit low to me).
This is quite a useful guide to what exactly can be upgraded, replaced or repaired on a steel or ti bike.

depends on how the fork was made originally. if it's a unicrown i think those are welded together. if lugged, then it should be able to be reheated and the silver can be softened to remove the steerer. why do you need to replace the steerer? are you going from threaded to non threaded?

Gawain

Yes, this is the exact reason. I want to go threadless and there is no way I'm going to use one of those threaded/threadless adapters. I just emailed Tommasini - who made this fork - to know whether they could do it.

your better off finding a local builder who can help. i doubt that Tommasini will do it, and you'd have to send it back to Italy.

Gawain

Well, I'll see what they respond. At least if they accept to do it, I know I can trust them for knowing exactly what they are doing. Furthermore, I'm in France so Italy is just next door.
