My 13 year old has 3 rides under his belt and wants to tackle Newport Coast. He acts like a seasoned veteran and is riding like one too!

Hey I am doing similar thing. Climb NPC then head north to Seal Beach do a loop around that base there, and head back through back bay.
Anyway I am leaving around 7, so I might see PaulB on the way back.

Umney, I think we're going to leave around 7 but I'm riding with my wife so there won't be any climbing involved, not that I'm a Mountain Goat, quite the opposite, but she's just getting back into riding again...
Have a great ride!

Hey Paul!!!
I am a little late in seeing this, and had already made plans to meet some friends at the Pier at 8am for the OCV Sunday ride.
Both Catherine and I would love to join you two on a ride, and hope to very soon! :)

I think I saw you guys at the light at the entrance to Huntington Beach. At least I saw bunch of people in SoCal Jerseys. I was going the other way.

It was probably us, as a few were wearing their SoCal jerseys. Perfect day for a ride!
I wanted to give a quick thanks to Jschen and DaveSANYYZ for coming up to ride with Jake and I. We had a great ride. I took a few pics that I will load a bit later and give a mini report. I am off to pick up my other two kids.:D

Well depending which direction. Going north I was flying 27mph, coming back I was puffing at 16-18mph. I think my years are still ringing from that wind sound. That can't be good for hearing in the long run. :(

Paul, it was nice riding with you and Jake, and Jason.
We went out southbound and back northbound. Paul and Jason were wearing SoCal jerseys, Jake in a blue one and I'm in red; single paceline of 4 for most of the ride.
It has been a while I rode up Newport Coast from the coastal side, and I'm glad I can still do it. On the way back on the flats, I got dropped though.  I was struggling on the flats, so I probably had my head down and didn't see you going the other way.
Paul, thanks again for organizing the ride. See you next time. :D
Mini report from yesterday's ride...
Jake and I woke up ready to ride as he was excited and a bit nervous to tackle Newport Coast as well as riding with a group other than he and I. My young grasshopper was ready for the challenge though.:p Jason and Dave met us at the house and we rolled off at about 8:30.
The pace down south from HB was a steady 16-18mph as we had a nice paceline going while fighting through the headwinds. The boy did great and never let up. I think Jason and Dave were impressed with his riding. As we approached NC, we decided to take a quick break, fuel up, and hydrate so Jake could focus on the task ahead. Jason and Dave were feeling good and went ahead of us to get in an extra climb up Vista Park.
I knew Jake would make it, but was glad to see we kept a steady 7-8mph pace the entire way. There were a few times however, he blurted out the imfamous "Are we there yet!";)
From there we rode down San Joaquin to MacArthur to ride the entire back bay. What goes up, must come down and Jake had a smile on his face as he reached the high 30's on the decent down San Joaquin.
After back bay we upped the pace to 20-22 on PCH heading north. We even got in a few short sprints that kicked us into the mid 30's.
We all got back to the house and headed off for a bite to eat to end a fun ride. it was Jake's longest ride to date and dad was very proud!!:D
Thanks again to Jason and Dave for joining us. Jake really enjoyed meeting you and riding with a group. As always, for me it was a pleasure seeing and riding with you again. I hope to do it again real soon. I told Jake I would put together another ride in the very near future and hopefully get a few more people to come out and join!! He's all for it!!:)

Nice!
Nice!
You will be on the next ride, yeah?!!;)
It was fun. Jake is a good rider.
On two occasions, I hit a personal best of 35 MPH on a flat ground sprint. (Can you tell that I never sprint?) At least I think the ground was flat and I think there wasn't any tailwind. Couldn't keep up with Paul, though.
Dave handily beat me up Newport Coast and Vista Ridge. Coming down Ridge Park, wimped out since I haven't rode much recently and only hit 47.4 MPH. Could have gone a bit faster if I had stayed aero for a bit longer. Hit 45 MPH on San Joaquin and then backed off wondering where everyone else went. That descent's probably good for another MPH or two on that steeper pitch right near the bottom... I was sitting up and coasting at 39 MPH.

Jake's fast. I have to admit that I can't really keep up with the 3 of your on the way back. :p
Riding up Newport Coast brings back nice memories of when I started riding ~1.5 years ago. Riding to NC beated me up a little, because I needed to put quite some effort in to maintain the pace. Part-way up NC, I got my climbing rhyme and it was fun all the way up Vista Ridge. Going down from VR maxed out at 29mph for me; I was kind of scared. :p On the San Joaquin downhill, I got back into the 40mph; less scary on straight, open roads.
Riding back to the start on the flats was pretty horrible for me. Was able to keep up after the first few red lights, but then can't accelerate quickly enough after a while. Got a little better after I gave up and slowly accelerated to cruising speed instead. :)
