I picked up a used R42 for one of my sons. I have found that when the boom is fully extended
to fit his height, chain management needs some real improvement. What I really need is a bolt
on idler assembly of some sort. Any ideas?

I have an older R40 and used one of these set ups from Hostel Shoppe:
Volae - Front Idler Hardware

Volae - Front Idler with Bearing

Mine is barely used. Due to reconfiguring my R40, I won't be needing it at this time. If you would be interested in mine, let me know.
