I am presently researching road bikes. I use clipless pedals on my MTB and would like to not have to buy another set of shoes. I would like to just put a set of MTB pedals on the road bike. At least for a season.

I am using the Crank Bros. Eggbeater S pedals (this is the stainless steel version) and Specialized Comp. shoes (Very stiff racing shoe).

Would there be a real advantage to getting real road shoes? (There would be a disadvantage. My wife's foot on my rear. :D )

I have heard of people doing this. And I know that you can get road cleats for Eggbeaters.

During a week long tour ride this past summer I noticed more riders utilizing MTB shoes then regular road shoes. The one thing I hear most is the ease of walking in MTB shoes in comparision. I wear MTB myself on my road bike basically for that reason and I don't have to spend the money for an additional pair of shoes. (although I own 2 pairs of MTB shoes - SIDI's and Answer's)

I wear Specialized ATB shoes and have a pair of Lakes as well - The Specialized I use with Frogs and really like the performance. Getting off the bike and being able to walk a bit is the primary advantage. More and more of the ATB shoe styling and function make them appealing for the road

I also wear specialized mtn team shoes on my roadbike.

I have specialized pedals on my roadbike.

I choose to use mtb shoes+pedals because, as mentioned above, I can walk on them. Very convinient, practical...

But if you're planning on racing, you should get road shoes. The larger contact area gets rid of the "hot spots". But the specialized shoes are pretty stiff. Have not experienced any problems since I got this.

I use MTB shoes with SPD pedals. I have stiff soled shoes, so I don't get any "hot spots". If I was indeed racing, I would invest in road shoes and pedals.

I use shimano mtb pedals with stiff Nike mtb racing shoes on my road bike and mountain bike. I've never a problem with "hot spots" and I can use one pair of shoes for both bikes.

I used SPDs on my road bike for about three years, worked fine. The only problem I found was that the SPDs came unclipped a little too easily when I wanted to sprint or do really fast spinning (110+ RPM). It was very frustrating and sometimes painful when that happened.
After I switched to LOOK I was happy with the results, but I didn't make the switch until I was ready to make that inve$tment.

I had Ritchey mtn.bike pedals on both of my bikes and now I use Egg Beaters.Save your money and just use your Mtn.shoes on the road bike.

I used to use a pair of Shimano mtb shoes up until this last summer when i scored a killer deal on a pair of road Sidi's. I say use the mtb shoes they work great and easier to walk in!

Keep your mountain shoes. I made the mistake of getting road shoes :( Even though I walk only a few feet after my commute, the two flights of stairs are murder and the tile surface is noisy, slippery and uncomfortable.

Thanks for the advice. That might let me up the bike budget a little.
