So, this is my first season of real training, but it got off to a rocky start. Back in February, when I was planning on starting my base training, I turned 21 and ended up jumping down a small flight of stairs as a drunken mess. Needless to say I haven't had much of anything since. In the accident I messed up my right foot/heel. I have just gotten back on the bike 3 weeks ago and am wondering, should I stick with base training for a while or just go straight into some FTP and other intensity work?

I figure the base is really important, but I don't want to miss out on my first racing season. Most of the events I'm looking into are sub hour and my thinking was that I could skimp on the endurance work and go straight to FTP, but I didn't know if that was a futile gesture or not.

Am I better off sitting the season out, gaining base and some intensity at the end and coming back strong next year or should I go for it now?

FYI Most of my events start mid-late June and I'm going to miss out on ~1.5 weeks of training during now and then, though I'll be able to do a little riding.

Oh, last question, how do you know when you have enough base and can go on to more intense training?

I'd give the racing a pass "first year." This year, just get used to doing some mileage. See if you can put in a series of 200 mile weeks. At the least, ride over 100 miles/week the rest of the year. Like until January 1.

You can tell if you have enough base when your last hill on a 60-70 mile ride is just as fast at your first hill. Or more mechanically, warm up on your trainer and do 30 minutes in the upper part of zone 3. Note your average speed at that HR. Recover in zone 2 for 15 minutes, then repeat the 30 minutes. If your speed is almost the same the second 30 minutes, you have enough base.
