Got up. Got dressed for a ride. Started to rain. I didn't feel like riding in the rain today (I'm doing a metric century tomorrow and I didn't feel like going through the get wet -clean the bike - load the bike cycle.). Went back inside.
What to do? Loaded up the two old bikes that I was going to donate to the local bike co-op (they teach kids how to work on bikes, give bikes to kids, sell used bikes to fund their programs). Dropped off the bikes.
On the way home, I headed off to second hand store to look at the classic Univega that I'd seen on Craigslist. Dangerous combination: me. Empty SUV. Two empty spaces in the garage. Rainy Day. Told myself I would only buy it if the paint was *perfect*, as advertised.
So, here it is: amazing, big, pink Univega Gran Turismo. Dates from the 80's (late 80's, I think).
Always wanted a pink bike. Always wanted to replace the fantastic Univega Specialissima touring bike that I gave away when I moved to London in 1999. This bike appears to have been ridden less than 1000 miles -- still has original "Univega" tires w/little wear; not a single wear point or chip in the (spectacular pink) paint (the flecks in the photo are dust). The cheesy, original foam handlebar padding is lightly worn (and my memory of the 80's foam stuff is that it tore to pieces after 20 or 30 rides; so this bike hasn't seen a lot of use). Decals are perfect, 100% new condition. Includes a lightly used Brooks B17 -- looks to me like the original owner took the Brooks from another bike, put it on the Univega, road it for a summer, and then put it away.
It had been sitting in the shop unsold for a year (I guess no other tall folks wanted a pink bike...it's a 61cm frame). Bike is beautifully built for touring -- double eyelets in the back, long chainstays, 42-inch wheel base, relaxed geometry, eyelets on front fork for a rack, Shimano triple crankset, cantilever brakes.
This will be my summer commuter when I'm done with it....am not sure whether to modernize it just a bit as is or possibly try to spread the frame and put in a Shimano Nexus internal hub and make this an evil pink commuting machine.
