Thanksgiving I met this guy.

He's about 80 years old, but he looks energetic and vibrant, lean. You guessed it--cyclist.

Can't say much about him, except I enjoyed the stew he brought to the turkey dinner. He said it was made from the deer he killed only two weeks ago. I asked him where he brought it to get it cut, and he said he dressed it himself. He said he liked it that way, because you don't know if you are getting your own deer when someone else cuts for you. He talked about how some folk are not cut out for deer hunting because you have to sit still for a long time. I liked his spirit.

He also canoes. He's done triathalons--bike, swim and canoe! Also MS 150 (he says it used to be 150 miles, but now it's 150 kilo's.) I was in silence. If I hadn't asked, he would never have brought any of it up, like it was normal for everyone.

I asked him if he remembered Pearl Harbor, and where he was. Boy, did that get him talking! He remembered exactly where he was and what he was doing. He said his dad wouldn't let him join because he was only 17 and you had to have parental permission at that age. (His buddy and cyclist partner, also a senior, reminded him that it was easy to lie your way into the service back then.)

I had a great Thanksgiving because of meeting this fine man.

Where was this that you met him? I think there is a story here too. 17 in 42 would make him 77 or 78. Sounds like he is doing good.

I love talking to older people who have lived through hard years, real hard, not can't buy the Mercedes, had to settle for a toyota hard.

I especially like talking about wartime and how resolved many Americans were back then. It disgusts me the number of weenies we have in society now who would rather appease the enemy than fight them.

This man is a member of the generations that made America great and we can learn many things from him. Wisdom beyond what exisits in most of America today will unfortunately die with him. I hope he bikes to over 100 years.

Thanks for sharing this LilBig :D

My Grandma is 96 and the doctor told her she is healthier than most 30 year olds. She just gave up walking a mile a day, she is getting a little unsteady on her feet now. I love talking to her and asking her about her life and times. She is still sharp and smart as smart can be and still full of life.. Not all older people see life like she does and not all of them have positive memories but that doesn't change the fact that they are interesting stories.

I see plenty of 'older' folks- guys in their 50s and 60s- cyclists and athletes- who have better physiques than 25 year olds. Considering how many tubby, pasty kids and teenagers I see, that's not hard. Maybe because these guys didn't grow up playing Nintendo and eating junk food!
