Classic & Vintage - Fuso - what am I worth

Wow, I was talking to a neighbor of mine about bikes and he says "Yeah, I am thinking about selling my old bike". Well, I didn't think much of it until he rolled out a Fuso Lux from 1991 with Super Record (also 1991). The bike is about an 8 out of 10 with a couple of small chips and some chrome starting to show those very small rust "button" (very, very small). I think it just needs a good cleaning. Well, what is this worth? Is this still made by Dave Moulton or was it outsourced (I think he did in later years but I am no expert here). The tubing is TSX and it rides damn nice. Well, what is a reasonable offer for this bike?

Dave is a member here and pops in occasionally. He's going to need a serial # to tell you when it was made. He likes to hear about his "children" who are scattered throughout the world.

Here are a few pictures. Lots of fun to ride! Can anyone identify which Campy group this is from. I think it is a combination of a few groups. It has 9 gears and the Ergo shifters which didn't exist in 1990 when the frame was built? Any idea what year this gruppo is from?

I also don't know when the rear derailleur was made with "Titanium" on it. Was this on all record rears?

Are you concerned about the RD having TI components, or is it marked "Titanium" somewhere on it?

There's your groupset name. No guarantees that the rest of the group is (I'm not familiar with post '87 Campag), but the crankset does appear to be Record as well.

Yeah, sorry about that I should have been more clear. I wanted to find out what year the Gruppo is from. I just am not familiar with the year it comes from.

c-record. Later, mmmmm, than 1991, though... I think that 1994 was the first year that the word Carbon appears on the shifter levers. I dunno why I think this but I think that the Lux was a Denny bike.

I have a Colnago with Record Ergo 8 which I think is ca. 1996-98. It does have the carbon fiber ball bearings but a different style crank. Yours looks more like a C-Record crank to me. My Record crankset isn't muh different frm a Chorus except the fifth spider arm is behind the crank arm (the usual on Record cranks I believe). C-Record has that "chunkier" look yours has.

The answer to your first question is a lot. I would try and pay him no more than he wants.
My real concern is the fit. It has an incredibly long stem and extra long seat post. Hopefully you are shorter than the person who was riding that set up.

The post and seat I threw on from my bike to ride it today. The stem is just a 120 but is a huge size. The bike is a 59 and I usually ride a 60. Depending on the price I hope to make due.

Oooooh man! Now that is a tough question. If I wasn't pitching toward decrepitude :(, I would sure want this- just my size! What tight geometry and sharp design. Nice round - oval - round chainstays. Must be sweet to ride.
Value? A decent offer (my best guess, from a cheapskate who hasn't bought a bike in decades!), and I don't think that it would be an insulting one, would be $400-$700, if it was made by Moulton. If your neighbor seems like he wants to do you a favor, and you can't get him to commit to giving you a ballpark figure, you could start lower and work up. But in an online auction, I'd be surprised if it didn't obtain the higher figure. Yeah, folks here at C&V manage to pull incredible bargains from the unsuspecting. And perhaps Moulton is not as sought after as the Italian stable, but this is right up there in quality. Good luck!

very good, then. I did some research as well, and found that Russ took over the Fuso line in 1993, when Dave retired. I still don't think it matters too much, both are fine builders, and Russ was apprentice to Dave for a long time before the transition.

that stuff looks to me like C-record, that followed and replaced Super Record, except I think the rear derailleur is newer. That is a fantastic frame, built by Dave Moulton, with excellent components. Take it!

edit: I stand corrected, looks like you have good evidence it was built in the Denny era! Still a great find. Take it.

According to the serial number, Dave built this one. It is one of only 100 or so frames built called a "Lux" - TSX tubing, built to order.

I would think that is a steal. Regular Fuso's routinely go for more than that on Ebay, plus shipping.

Thanks for your feedback. I plan on buying it this weekend.

I took it out to the local club ride and got a lot of funny looks and people lifting it up and faking back spasms. Granted it is about 5 lbs heavier than the heaviest bike in the group. Nonetheless, I won every hill climb and smoked them on the sprint. For good measure I rode off the group for the last 3 or 4 miles (ok, I was dead tired). On flats and downhills the bike rides on rails. On hills I could definitely feel the extra pounds. What a great ride.

So, It turns out I paid $550 for the bike (he kept the front wheel).

For an extra $150 I got 3 brand new conti 3000, C-record Crank (used), C-record rear, C-Record Bottom bracket, 4 or 5 old Campy wrenches (big ones), vintage campy bar end shifters, a ton of campy bolts (they were taken off the bike as he purchased and installed a Ti bolt kit which is on the bike, vintage cinelli stem in box, extra campy cable housing and cables, and best of all from the factory Fuso touch up paint in both colors. I think that is a pretty good deal.

I would say so. The original c-record components are worth a fair amount if they are in
decent condition.
That is a gorgeous bike. I have campy 8 speed on my Serotta, the stuff just works. I don't really
miss the extra 2 cogs in the back.

Marty, the owner changed the rear and shifters to be 9 speed and they work great. I have the newest Record and it isn't that much different in shifting. I do love the bike and taking it out on the club rides with the carbon folk.
