so when i'm on my middle front ring and smaller ring on my cassette... my chain drags on my front derailleur and my gears feel like they skip. there's nothing wrong with the teeth on any cogs and the chain isn't catching on the derailleur... it's just draggin. can a chain lose it's tension over time and if so is there some way to tighten it. i think i just have to adjust cable tension for the derailleur but what can i do about the "skipping" gears???

Check the chain for stretch and the small cog for wear.

The rubbing is most likely due to cable "stretch", standard maintenance stuff.

the chain hasn't stretched and the small cog isn't worn at all. do you think it could be from the chain catching on the big ring up front as it crosses over to the middle ring?

I'd adjust cable tension first and, then, see.

Misadjusted shifter cables often appear to be "chain skip". It's the very first thing to check and adjust.
