Hi, I'm gradually doing longer and longer rides this year, each weekend, and would love to find some routes away from NYC (manhattan by the GW is where i live) to the more peaceful roads that does not involve 9w to bear mountain.
Long island is not of interest. Primarily NY, NJ and CT where there are hills.
Entire routes are excellent if you have any, but mostly just ways to get out of the city.
FYI, this weekend was 157 miles and each weekend I'm adding 10% to that number up to 405 miles by early July.

Head north through the Bronx to Westchester. Plenty of hills and will get you to CT, Putnum, etc. Heres a good link to Hudson Valley bike routes.

There are also some good routes in western NJ and PA but have no idea how to get there other than driving the bike out. There are also plenty of good routes to Bear Mtn, and Harriman, going up through Bergan Cty and avoidng 9W. You might try one of the routing web sites like mapmyride.com or bikeroutetoaster.com to plan a route
I've yet to ride 50 miles this year. I'm hoping to hit my first century mark sometime this summer.
Some additonal thoughts. Once in the Bear Mtn Harriman Park area there are some great roads. Rt 106 which can be a little dicey (narrow and no shoulder in spots) through the park, continues across Rt 17 through Sterling Forest and will get you to Warwick and Greenwood Lake. Also the roads around the reservoirs around Ringood Park in NJ. Some killer hills in the area.
Have you looked at the New York Cycle Club ride library? I'm not sure if it's open to non-members, but try nycc.org, then click "rides" and "ride library."
Also 5bbc.org.
Both clubs offer regular rides for non-members and these are great ways to learn new routes.
edit: also http://www.njrando.com/ - there are a few brevet routes originating in NYC, from 110 to 120 miles, with 8,000 to 9,000 feet of climbing. Mostly low-traffic roads, especially on the weekends. These rides will keep you busy for the better part of a day!
