Yesterday I went on on a shortish group ride of 40km (thats 24.85 miles)
I'm just getting over a cold but really didn't eat much that morning ( 2 sausage and egg Mcmuffins , hasbrown and an oJ)
anyway towards the end I had very little left and could have used s kick in the butt
what are some foods I can carry with me for when this occurs
I''ll fix the eating thing next time but still want some backup

There are numerous power bars available on the market, although for me nothing beats a simple banana.
For a 25 mile ride, if I had a good breakfast, nothing on the ride except water. Otherwise just one pack of gel in case.

2 sausage Mcmuffins are about 380 calories each, hasbrowns are 150 calories, and a medium OJ is 210 calories for a total of 1120 calories .... that's ample to take you 40 kms!!! However, in the future you might want to trade a mcmuffin in for a muffin ... protein and fat takeslonger to digest, and so if you ate all that, and then immediately went out for a ride, it could be you didn't digest everything in time for it to be used.
As for other foods, you can go with: energy bars, cereal bars, gels, granola bars, cookies, pastries, beef jerky, salted almonds, fruit, and all sorts of things.
fresh pressed grape juice is wicked sugary. A sip or two of that will get me up any hill.
Fig newtons, for for the organically fueled, Fig Newmans. Many people put Gatorade in their bottles. Gels are good but expensive and nasty messy.
If i am going on a long ride (40+ miles) i take 1 bottle mixed with Cytomax and a granola bar. I would think on a 20 mile ride your breakfast would be enough.
Oreo Cakesters. Either white or brown filling will do.
Yesterday I did 110 miles on a box of Cakesters, 2 bananas, 1 Balance bar, and three cans of iced tea.
I thought there were some Cakesters left over. I called one of my kids down to the garage for a treat but there were none left in my saddle bag. How cruel.
For a 25 mile ride, one package of cakesters about 2/3 of the way through.

Squeeze that breakfast in a press and you could power a diesel truck for 24 miles. Except for possibly the OJ, there wasn't any food there. Eat real food and 24 miles will be a snap.

Didn't eat much!? That's a joke right? The McMuffins are 450 calories a piece, hashbrown is 140 and so is a small PJ
Total Calories = 1140
This is about half a days worth of calories for a non-athlete. Try eating something with a little more nutritional value and I think you'll feel much better during your ride, if not better all the time.

Am I the only one that doesn't eat before cycling in the morning? I usually go for between an hour and two hours, and for some reason, I've never considered the possibility that not eating might be hindering my performance (not even when I do intervals). How can I tell if I'm underfueled?
i buy trailmix bars. they are cheaper than powerbars. and one trailmix bar will send me goin 10 miles. they have all kinds of nuts, grains, and dried fruits and are covered in honey. DELICIOUS!
and as for mcdonalds. one time i was so hungry.. i was dying. i had no energy. they had a half off bigmac promotion so i decided to get one since it would be the most food for the money. i felt like i had eaten a bunch of bricks., it made me more tired and feel sick. i actually went slower. i went straight home and took a nap. in other words f**k mcdonalds. i'd rather be hungry than sick.

I suspect your body rebelled against the Mickey D's and went on strike. 25 miles, you need no food and a lighter breakfast. Geez, I rode 104 miles yesterday and had a bagel with some cream cheese before leaving.
This is why I believe in "negative calories," the type that can build fat, but not fuel energy.

for me Fig Newtons and the likes are hard to choke down on hot summer day while riding on the bike.
rides under 40 i go with water and HEED. maybe a Hammer Gel if i need a pick me up near the end. longer rides i go with Cliff Bars and Nature Valley Granola bars. if it is an organized ride i just graze on whatever they have and hope that is pop tarts and oreo cookies!

If that's not eating much then what do you consider a big breakfast?
If I ate that much I wouldn't be hungry till supper time.
Anyway, for a boost on the next ride, carry a couple or PowerGels or HammerGels in your jersey's back pocket

I do the same exact thing. MAYBE I'll have a banana before a long ride. I'm planning on doing a metric centruy next month and was planning on bringing a few bananas and a Cliff bar. Hope that's enough.
When I do morning rides, I don't eat anything unless the distance is over 50 miles. It seems like you need a little something. As suggested, a banana is hard to beat. It has simple and complex carbohydrates, it is cheap and comes in a biodegradeable wrapper.

I don't usually before a short morning ride (less than 30 miles), but I tend to eat throughout the night and rarely wake up hungry. Other than feeling hungry, pretty much anyone shoud have enough fuel stored up for a 1 to 2 hour morning ride...
Dr. Micheal J Ross in his book "Maximum Preformance for Cyclist" says that riding in the AM without eating is a "lipolysis workout". The book states that the body has used up the stored fuel in the blood and liver as energy over the night. Riding without eating in the AM utilizes stored fat as fuel and you should ride in Z3. The book states that around 1 hour or when you smell ammonia on your breath to stop immediately and eat as you will begin to slow down and or bonk.
For a second, I thought that this was an old post that had been pumped to the top. But I now realize that people are just asking the same question over and over....and OVER :)

change that to a regular egg mcmuffin and that's actually a fairly healthy breakfast. You *DO* need the fat,just not that much! Stay away from the dang hasbrowns.
